Carlos Gonzalez sparks as Colorado Rockies defeat Atlanta Braves 3-2 – MLB Update
Colorado Rockies’ left-fielder, Carlos Gonzalez had a remarkable day with the bat as he posted one run with a single RBI and went 2-for-5 in the Rockies’ 3-2 win against the Atlanta Braves at Coors Field, Colorado on July 20.
The Rockies got off the mark at the bottom of the first inning and took a 2-0 lead. Todd Helton struck a two-run homer (389 feet) towards right-field and Carlos Gonzalez added a single run. In the second inning, the Braves posted one run to cut their deficit
2-1 when David Ross doubled off deep left-centre and Jason Heyward scored a single run.
Third to seventh innings of the game were score-less for both sides as the pitchers took better control on their pitches. In the third inning, Heyward fouled out to third base, Ross struck-out swinging and Alex Gonzalez grounded out to third base.
At the top of the fourth inning, Troy Tulowitzki grounded out to third base, Seth Smith grounded out to second base and Eliezer Alfonzo struck-out swinging without giving any run. In the sixth inning, Mark Ellis singled off left-centre but Helton got out
to second base and Smith struck-out swinging.
The Braves missed the scoring opportunities at the top of the seventh inning when Nate McLouth was struck-out swinging and Ross fouled out to right-field. The Braves’ starter, Tim Hudson permitted two runs on five hits in his seven inning pitches and walked
one with an ERA of 3.39. He had just five strike-outs on his 107 pitches.
Speaking to reporters, Alex Gonzalez said, “I think it's a good read on his part. It looked like he maybe just hesitated a little bit. But nobody out, it's obviously not a contact play, but if he reads that third base going to his left -- it's a difficult
play Stewart made look pretty easy.”
During the eighth inning, the Braves scored one run to tie the game 2-2. Jordan Schafer posted one run when Dan Uggla singled off centre-field. In the ninth inning, the Rockies rallied and got a 3-2 lead when Carlos Gonzalez singled off right-field and Dexter
Fowler contributed the tie-breaking run. Ty Wigginton moved to second base at the end of ninth inning.
The Rockies led off the four-game series 2-1 after taking a thrilling victory.
