Carlos Molina grabs career’s first title by nailing Marcos Leonardo Jimenez – Boxing News
Carlos Molina, the surging American lightweight, successfully defended his win streak, grabbing an impressive unanimous decision over Dominican proud, Marcos Leonardo Jimenez, in a 10-round bout held on June 16, 2012, in order to become the new NABO Intercontinental
Lightweight champion.
The duo headlined the pay-per-view organised and promoted by Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions and the ring for the showdown was setup at McAllen Convention Center in Pharr, Texas, United States.
The show was televised live on Telefutura by the name ‘Solo Boxeo Tecate: Border Explosion’ and was co-headlined by the non-title six-round welterweight bout between James Cantu and Hector Garza.
Molina, 26, was entering in his career’s 18th bout and boasted 16 wins with just seven coming via sheer knockout. The young Californian lad has never lost even a single bout and has just grabbed one draw decision against Juan Montiel.
This was Carlos’ very first title bout and the orthodox pugilist wanted it to be a classic win. But things did not go as per expectations and the whole bout seemed to be a sluggish and lacklustre showdown.
Molina’s Saturday night opponent, Marcos, 27, was entering in his career’s 2nd bout and though possessed a slight upper hand over Carlos yet exhibited a tarnished resume. The Dominican proud emerged victorious in a total 18 bouts and collected 12 of his
wins by nailing the opponents out cold via knockout.
From the very beginning of the bout, Carlos was the one who took initiatives by moving forward and attacking the diffident Marcos. Leonardo did not strive hard to stun Carlos in fact he just emphasised on defending himself and waiting for Carlos to make
a move.
Molina, later on, highlighted Marcos’ attitude and stated, “It was a very slow fight and not really to my taste. His style really slowed me down and it seemed like he was waiting for me to do something early on. I was able to make the necessary adjustments
in the later rounds and started applying the pressure a little more.”
After adjusting his brawling style in accordance with Leonardo’s, things started to get a bit interesting and Carlos connected considerable number of jabs eventually grabbing a unanimous decision by collecting 99-91, 97-93 and 96-94 scores.
After winning and grabbing the career’s first title, Molina apologised to some extent about not putting forth an exciting bout and stated, “This performance was not to my taste tonight. I wish I could have given the fans a better fight because that is always
my number one goal. But I am excited to capture my first ever title and now it should propel me into the top 15.”
With this win Carlos has collected his 17th win and is now the NABO Intercontinental Lightweight champion as well whereas Marcos has received his third career loss.
