  1. Two legendary fighters here.  I have always picked Sugar Ray Robinson (by a slim margin) as the best middleweight champ ever with Monzon and Hagler tied for second.  Monzon did not lose a fight over like an 8 year span or something like that and won 87 fights losing just 3 with 59 knockouts in his brilliant career.  He beat people like Nino Benvenuti, Emile Griffith, Jose Napoles, and Rodrigo Valdez among many others in his brilliant career.  He was tall at about 6'0" and had great boxing ability and a powerful sledgehammer like right hand to go along with an iron chin.  Marvin Hagler was a fierce fighter that often fought from a southpaw stance.  He had a career record of 62 wins 3 losses with 52 knockouts beating people like John Mugabi, Thomas Hearns, Vito Anteuofermo during his great career.  I believe that during this great fight that Monzon would have controlled a lot of the early rounds using his reach advantage and great jab.  Hagler would have also landed effectively against Monzon but both having iron chins, would have been able to take it.  Hagler would have came on strong in the middle rounds and  would have landed some good shots to the great Argentinian.  Down the stretch in rounds 11-15 many of the rounds would be too close to call and in the end of a very close fight it's called a draw.  Both fighters feel that they done enough to win and want a rematch.  One of the best boxing matchups you could possibly make here and good question.

  2. It would have been a h**l of a fight but i think Hagler would be to strong for Monzon in the end.

  3. these guys were both greats and both are mentioned in the same breath by most experts and fans alike

if they fought 5 times, the result would probably 2 each with  1 even.

i would edge ever so slightly toward monzon though,

  4. Its tough to pick against Marvin Hagler.   He's a personal favorite.   However,  everyone thinks Hagler is a banger.  He CAN bang WITH bangers because they cant hurt him.  He's HARD AS STONE.  However,  Hagler does have a few weaknesses.  Monzon just happens to have the tools to exploit them.

Monzon cant hurt Hagler but he can hit Marvin enough times to keep him off game.  Hagler, on the other hand,  CAN hurt Monzon.

Hagler would go in and box for two rounds until he realizes Monzon can match him for speed but land more punches because he has good footwork.  Behind on points,  Marvin would pick up the pace in round 3.  He would pressure Monzon.

In round four Marvin would hurt Carlos for the first time in the fight.  it would also be the last time.  Unlike Thomas Hearns,  Monzon can, and WILL tie Marvin up.  Hagler is stronger and is always in better shape.  Monzon, ever the lady's man,  didnt always train hard.  He would for this one.

Monzon would have the strength to keep Hagler off game on the inside, with clinches,  breaking away and landing before Marvin can get set.  It wouldnt be a pretty fight to watch but it would boil down to one man doing the only thing he could to win.

Hagler and Monzon both rank at the top of the list of middleweight champions.   Both are before guys like Lamotta, Zale, Graziano and even Leonard, who was much better at welter.   They are on tier with Greb and Ketchel, slightly better than both.  Walker is up there with this group.

Some who would beat Monzon would lose to Hagler.  Most would lose to Hagler because he can match them on the inside and pot shot them from the outside as well.  Hagler is just that much tougher than most.  However,  if he cant hurt you he probably cant beat you.

And Robinson is better than all of them.

Monzon would have his hands full in the middle rounds but he would build a comfortable lead.  Hagler would pick it up in the later rounds.  He would have some success on the inside but Carlos would never allow him to get too busy.

Late in the fight Hagler would rally,  chasing Monzon down but being tied up and pot shotted in the process.  Hagler would win the last two rounds but it would not be enough.

    Monzon by close unanimous decision.

  5. If Hagler came to fight like he did for most of his career, I think he would take Carlos.  But, if he plays pitty-pat, like he did in his last couple of fights.  Carlos would but a hurt on him.

  6. Carlos Monzon was a great Middle Weight champion, but as good as he was, Hagler was better.  I think Hagler would have gutted out another epic one and took the decision, but Monzon's chin  would have kept him in it to the end.  It would have been a war, but Hagler would have most likely taken Monzon, and if you though Hearns/Hagler was a fight, this one would have been similar, but gone the distance.  Great match up.

    Marvin Hagler by decision.

  7. monzon would win in my books

    thanks
