Carlos Munoz and Frederico Morais make the Round 3 cut at San Miguel Pro Zarautz
Costa Rica’s Carlos Munoz and Portugal’s Frederico Morais made it through into the third round (Round of 48) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz after claiming top honours in their respective Round 2(Round of 96)
heats that went down at the main event site of Zarautz in Basque Country, Spain, on Thursday, August 30.
South Africa’s Beyrick De Vries finished behind Munoz in second place during the 21st heat to accompany the winner into the next round of the competition, whereas Brazil’s Flavio Nakagima and his compatriot Alex Ribeiro got eliminated from the
competition after finishing in third and fourth place respectively.
The 22nd heat saw Hawaii’s Keanu Asing successfully extend his life in the competition after finishing in second place, right behind Morais, to advance to the third round. Basque Country’s Hodei Collazo and Australia’s Jordin Watson were forced
to leave the race for the event title after rounding out the bottom-two positions.
With three-to-four foot waves on offer at the primary event site, the afternoon session was expected to feature a series of thrilling battles between the talented surfers from world over.
The 21st heat pitted Munoz against De Vries, Nakagima and Ribeiro in a four-man battle for the Round 4 spot.
The Costa Rican surfer got off to a slow start, but eventually managed to post a 7.83 on the score-board. He immediately followed it up with a 6.30-point ride, thus finishing with a heat-total of 14.13 points. The score held up until the end to see him through
into the next round.
De Vries scored a 6.20 and 5.47 off his best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 11.67 points, which served to extend his life in the event as well.
Nakagima and Ribeiro finished with a heat-total of 10.57 and 9.80 points respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
The next heat saw Morais walk away with the win after scoring a 6.83 and 7.27 off his best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 14.10 points.
Asing accompanied him into the next round after securing runner-up place through a two-wave total of 12.63 points, which included a 5.93 and 6.70-point ride.
Collazo finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.40 points, while Watson had to settle for bottom position after registering a two-wave total of 7.44 points.
