Carlos Pena expected to sign on with the Chicago Cubs
The Chicago Cubs are looking to add more power in their roster and Carlos Pena may just be the man to fill the role. The Major League season has long been over. Even though Baseball isn’t being played on the field, 30 teams from
the National League and the American League are competing for the right players in the free agency to fill up gaping holes, in the formation. There have been trades, tenders and free agent signings in the off-season period thus far. However, the main flow
of activity is expected to run high in the month.
Top teams are desperate to repair their formation with new blood and the winter meetings are expected to boost trade up exponentially. There are teams like the Chicago Cubs that are weighing their finances against the top potential
club players in the free market. The chase to sign the best ball stars is one and like the Washington Nationals, who signed Jayson Werth on a 7-year deal, there are clubs hoping to strike gold before the turn of the year.
Derek Lee was a key member of the Cubs’ roster and his exit in August has cost the side a lot of cover advantage. The management at the helm is prepared to make good deals and reports are swishing in on a free agent signing. Carlos
Pena, a former Tampa Bay Rays player, is a free agent, this year and he is believed to be the man to be considered for the move. At first, reports suggested Adam LaRoche as the prime target, but now it has been confirmed that Pena has been the true target,
all along.
Though the news is not official, the deal is approximately worth $10 million and will last for a year. General Manager Jim Hendry has been involved with talks over free agent-pitcher, Brandon Webb.
Despite reports on another signing, Hendry denies claims and recently came on to say,
"I'm in the inquirer mode this week. We'll try to always make the club better, and we came down here with the mindset to attack the areas I told you about. Monday, we met more with clubs, and today we met more with agents. Hopefully, we tie the two together
pretty soon in the next 48 hours and come out of here with some new additions."
Hendry is not planning to announce Pena soon and the reason may be due to his window shopping endeavours.
"They're all different kinds of players," he said. "Some have power, some are good fielders, and some haven't been as good defensively. We're just trying to get the best fit that makes the most sense and makes us a better club."
