Carlos Pena looking for multi-year multi-million deal – MLB News
As the Chicago Cubs has offered arbitration to Carlos Pena two days ago, it has been considered a risky move, as Pena is reportedly interested in a multi-year multi-million deal.
Pena has to decide about whether he wants to accept arbitration or not before December 7. According to the revised rules by Major League Baseball, the players will have to file their decision until 11:00 p.m. on December 7. In case he does not agree to accept
arbitration and moves towards any other club, the Cubs will get a switch pick option. Switch pick is made between the first and the second round of the draft in June.
Pena was already in a unique deal with the Cubs. He agreed to $10 million one-year contract, according to which he received $3 million in December 2010, $4 million in 2011 and will get the remaining $3 million in 2012 season. This situation has forced Pena
to think closely about the change of club.
Last year, Pena was somewhat better in the park, as he launched 28 home-runs, 80 RBIs, and 72 runs with a .225 batting average. He was constant threat for the pitchers, who let him walk 101 times, making him the third highest in the National League. However,
Pena will have to wait until the top first basemen, Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder finalise their decisions. Major League Baseball has named Pena as a Type-B free agent and it will put a negative effect over his demand.
As the same agent Scott Boras is representing Pena and Fielder, it might cause some conflict for the players. Boras has been seen with the Cubs’ management in recent days. Boras met with the Cubs’ front office in the General Manager meetings. Cubs have shown
an interest in Fielder.
However, Boras did not provide a clear answer to a question inquiring if Fielder is going to land with the Cubs.
"Prince has put (up) some outstanding numbers at Wrigley Field," Boras said at the GM meetings.
Cubs have also given an arbitration offer to Aramis Ramirez and if both players decline the arbitration offer, the club will receive about $55 million as a 2011 payroll. It will allow the Cubs to hire some high priced players like the brilliant Prince Fielder.
