Carlos Pena’s double RBIs help Chicago Cubs defeat Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6 - MLB Update
Chicago Cubs’ first baseman, Carlos Pena displayed an amazing performance with the bat as he hit two RBIs including a solo homer and went 1-for-3 with an average of .222 in the Cubs’ 7-6 victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park, Pittsburgh on August
4.
The first two innings were score-less for both sides as the batters struggled and were unable to play scoring shots. During the first inning, the batters flied out due to their uneven shots as at first base, Darwin Barney fouled out as Starlin Castro flied
out. At the short-stop position, Aramis Ramirez grounded out.
Similarly, the Pirates’ batters also displayed an unsteady performance as at centre-field, Ryan Ludwick flied out as Pedro Alvarez lined out towards third base. Ryan Doumit was grounded out to second base during the second inning of the game. Geovany Soto
hit a solo homer (367 feet) towards left-field to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead during the third inning.
Cubs added three runs at the top of the fourth inning to raise their lead but the Pirates stepped on the gas at the bottom of the fourth inning and blasted six runs to take a 6-4 lead. Pena hit a one-run homer (421 feet) to centre-field while Blake DeWitt
struck a two-run homer (400 feet) towards right-field and Marlon Byrd got off the mark with a single run.
On the other side, Garrett Jones posted a single run on the drive of Ludwick towards left-centre. Xavier Paul hit a grounder into fielder’s choice to third base and Ludwick added one run to the Pirates’ score-card. The third, fourth and fifth runs for the
Pirates were taken by Alvarez, Paul and Brandon Wood when James McDonald doubled off deep centre-field.
Andrew McCutchen hit a double-run shot towards deep centre-field and McDonald contributed the sixth run at the end of fourth inning. The pitchers played a key role from fifth to seventh inning of the game and did not throw the shaky pitches.
In the eighth inning, the Cubs exploded three runs to get a convincing 7-6 lead. Reed Johnson, Castro and Barney scored three consecutive runs to raise the potential of the Cubs. As a result, the Cubs swept the Pirates 4-0 in the four-game series and confirmed
their fifth consecutive victory in the current season.
