Carlos Quentin shines as Chicago White Sox defeat Oakland Athletics 18-1 - MLB Update
Carlos Quentin put in a tremendous performance as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Oakland Athletics 18-1 in their Cactus League game at Camelback Ranch, Arizona on Friday, March 18.
Right-fielder Quentin got three runs and four RBIs on three hits in his span of four at-bats. The 28-year-old also launched a grand slam off Athletics’ starter Bobby Cramer in the third inning. Paul Konerko followed the same path as he hit a huge homer off
Cramer in the same inning.
The White Sox controlled all aspects of the game as, their pitchers completely confined Oakland’s line-up to nothing. Left-handed pitcher John Danks displayed a tremendous performance permitting just one run in six innings, while he struck-out four batters.
The White Sox were so confident in him that they did not toss the ball to other pitchers except Philip Humber, who threw a scoreless-hitless three innings and getting two strike-outs.
The outing was completely dominated by the White Sox as second baseman Gordon Beckham and catcher Tyler Flowers’ bats also swung to get more runs on the board. The lead gained in first innings then kept increasing until the end of game. Chicago managed to
earn at least two runs in every inning except the sixth and seventh when fortune favoured the Athletics. The White Sox used 11 batters in the fourth that piled up six runs taking a massive 14-1 lead.
Athletics starter Cramer, in his fifth spring appearance, looked out of form as he consumed eight runs on nine hits including three homers in just three innings. However, he was not the only pitcher to get abused as Yadel Marti, Josh Outman and Jerry Blevins
all went for high scores.
Cramer, who was competing for a spot in the rotation, had some comments on his performance. "I'm not that guy who can afford to have an outing like I had today. I have to pitch my rear end off every time," he said. "I've never had a game like that at any
level. That was embarrassing."
Chicago, who was coming from a scoreless game against the Milwaukee Brewers, struck back with such momentum that it amazed the manager Ozzie Guillan who said, “Yesterday I had people all over me because we only had three hits. Then today we score eighteen
so all of a sudden they say, 'Save it for the season.’”
The Athletics earned just one run that was off the bat of first baseman Daric Barton when he hammered Danks for a single. The Athletics’ team leader in hits, centre-fielder Coco Crisp who left the game due to a hamstring issue, commented about his possible
comeback on Saturday.
Chicago took the victory in this one-sided match-up, as they get ready for the regular season.
