Carlos Santana glows as Cleveland Indians defeat Minnesota Twins 6-5 - MLB Update
Cleveland Indians’ pinch hitter, Carlos Santana had a remarkable day with the bat as he went 1-for-1 with an average of .240 and hit one RBI including a solo homer in the Indians’ 6-5 win against the Minnesota Twins at Progressive Field, Cleveland on September
23.
In the first inning, Twins scored two runs while the Indians were able to post one run and reduced their lead 2-1 at the bottom of first inning. Chris Parmelee drove a single-run shot to shallow right-centre while Ben Revere and Trevor Plouffe both scored
two runs jointly. On the other side, Indians’ right-fielder Kosuke Fukudome posted one run when Jim Thome doubled to left-field.
Indians tied the game 2-2 at the bottom of the second when Matt LaPorta hit a double-run drive towards right-centre and Lonnie Chisenhall posted a tie run. Both teams advanced their lead 4-4 in the third inning by adding two runs to their individual score-cards.
Parmelee hit a solo homer (405 feet) towards right-field.
Joe Benson hit a grounder into fielder’s choice to third base and Brian Dinkelman scored a single run on the throwing error of Indians’ second baseman Jason Kipnis. Conversely, Thome hit a two-run homer (445 feet) to centre-field as Jason added a tie run
for Cleveland. During the fourth and fifth inning, the batters showed a shaky performance.
Indians’ starter, Justin Masterson pitched just over four innings and had four strike-outs with an ERA of 3.21. He permitted four runs, five hits, six walks, one home-run and three earned runs on his 106 pitches.
Indians’ manager, Manny Acta said, “It takes a special player to do that on an emotional night when he is honoured. We wanted to win it badly for him. Thome called it. He was standing right next to me and called it. Amazing.”
At the bottom of the sixth inning, LaPorta hit a single-run drive to centre-field and Chisenhall posted one run to give the Indians a 5-4 lead. In the seventh, Rene Tosoni doubled to deep centre-field and Luke Hughes added a tie run for Twins and the score-board
moved to 5-5. During ninth inning, Santana hit a decisive home-run (418 feet) towards right-centre to end the game 6-5.
As a result, Indians led off the four-game series 1-0 against Twins at Cleveland.
