Carlos Silva shines as Chicago Cubs defeat Los Angeles Angels 14-13 – MLB Update
Right-hander Carlos Silva offered only eight runs and 10 strikes in just over two innings as the Chicago Cubs beat the Los Angeles Angels 14-13 at HoHokam Park in Arizona on March 7.
Bryan LaHair's extensive single to the slit in right-center field scored Fernando Perez with the successive run with two outs in the base of the ninth inning. Perez had arrived at base on a one-out walk and had wrapped second.
In two starts of just over three innings, Silva has provided only 14 runs (11 ERA), 13 hits and two homers. A rapid wind was gusting out to right-center on Monday’s game, but Silva did not change his pitches.
Silva said, "It was a little scary with the wind blowing out [against the Cubs]. My sinker did sink a little more. I've been really focusing on getting the ball down. My fastball was moving well. And I felt I was able to throw well out of the stretch a couple
of times."
Silva identifies that he needs to throw better to calm his critics. When he throws well, nobody says something. He had 10-6 record with an ERA of 4.22 in 21 starts in the last season. It was his first season with the Cubs.
Angels’ starter Dan Haren also feels better, particularly after pitching three decent innings over the Cubs. He walked one and struck-out three. The right-hander faced the loss in his initial start against Texas Rangers on the game played on March 2.
At the end of his discussion, Silva stated that, "I was feeling pretty good. Most of them were singles that were hit through the hole [between infielders]. You're usually not concerned with results. But you need results when you are competing for a starting
spot in the rotation.”
Later on, Silva was distressed about three blunders in the first inning of his first start against the Milwaukee Brewers. He acknowledged fault for that occasion.
Both teams combined 37 strikes and used 13 throwers. Scott Moore hit an impressive knock in a seven-run sixth inning for the Cubs. Angels’ first baseman Mark Trumbo was 4-for-4 with a single home-run during his third inning of the spring.
Silva was obtained in a trade with Arizona Diamondbacks on July 25. He had a Win-Loss record of 5-4 in 14 starts for the Angels and ended in 12-12 overall. He depends on five pitches, two-seam fastball, split-finger throw, four-seam fastball, curveball and
a cutter.
The Cubs put in a tremendous effort as they managed to contain the Angels’ offence and take a much needed victory. The Angels will be disappointed in their performance and will be looking to improving their game-play during the rest of the Spring Training.
