Carlos Tévez spat with Roberto Mancini down to ‘wanting to win’
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini can at times look like he doesn’t take anything too seriously, but Carlos Tévez certainly felt the full seriousness of his boss on Sunday.
At half-time during their game with Newcastle, Tévez was reportedly unhappy with Mancini’s tactics, and was arguing with the Italian in the dressing room in front of his teammates. It is believed Tévez was increasingly upset at being deployed as a lone striker and frustrated at the limited number of chances he has had this season.
The Argentinian has scored 26 goals in his last 30 Premier League outings, and it has been reported that he was comprehensively told by Mancini who was in charge and that he shouldn’t question his decisions. Tévez was made the club’s captain by Mancini for this season, taking the armband from Kolo Touré to ease their sometimes dodgy relationship, but that could prove to be a bad decision.
Tévez was also reportedly told on Sunday to get changed as he was going to be taken off at half-time, but after a clear-up he remained on the pitch and helped his side win 2-1 to take them to second in the table, above rivals Manchester United.
Last season, Tévez and Mancini clashed over the sacking of Mark Hughes. Tévez said in an interview that Hughes should never have been given the boot and was critical of Mancini’s methods in training. The response of Mancini was apparently a quiet word in his office to say he was not happy about what he had said.
City assistant boss Brian Kidd has however played down the spat between Tévez and Mancini, saying it was more about their will to win. “There was an awful lot said between the group at half-time, but the lads showed a great response in the second half,” he said. “It showed how badly they wanted to win.”
