Carlos Zambrano gives up single in eleventh as Miami Marlins edged out 4-5 by Cincinnati Reds-MLB
Relief pitcher Carlos Zambrano allows single in the eleventh as he costs the Miami Marlins a 4-5 defeat against the Cincinnati Reds at Marlins Park, Miami in the last match of the three game series on September 16, 2012.
Marlins began on a low as they went through three scoreless innings while the Reds posted a one run lead.
As the game progressed, Marlins replied strongly and tried to dominate the opposition.
In an attempt to come from behind and run away with the victory, Miami registered one run in the seventh and the eighth each. As a result, they tied the score and began looking for a couple of hits in the last inning to earn the triumph.
However, as they failed to outscore the Reds, the extra innings were played.
In the top of the eleventh their reliever Zambrano gave up one run. With the fact that Marlins showed little resistance in the bottom of the same inning, they lost the game.
Ricky Nolasco did the starting job for the Marlins. In five innings, he leaked three runs and yielded 10 hits. Nolasco admits he struggled on the mound and was unable to stop batters from striking a sufficient number of hits on Sunday.
"Obviously, this was not my best day," Nolasco said. "I got singled to death; a lot of ground balls just found the holes but it's part of the game. I just tried to go as deep as I could."
Offensively third baseman Greg Dobbs, shortstop Jose Reyes and second baseman Donovan Solano stepped up for the Marlins.
Reyes managed three hits in five at-bats. One of his hits gave an impression that it will go out of the park for a home run but when it fell short Jose was disappointed.
"It's tough when you hit the ball good and you think you've got a home run and the ball doesn't go out," Reyes said. "It's kind of tough as a hitter but like I say it is what it is. You have to deal with it."
The series is now complete and the Marlins will be expecting better shows from their pitchers next time. It will be interesting to see if their pitchers can ensure them victories in the upcoming games.
