Carlos Zambrano’s pitching helps Chicago Cubs defeat Chicago White Sox 6-3 – MLB Update
Chicago Cubs’ starter, Carlos Zambrano showed an amazing performance as he threw eight innings with an ERA of 4.50 and had five strike-outs in the Cubs’ 6-3 victory against the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago on June 20.
The Cubs led off the three-game series 1-0 against the White Sox at Chicago.
At the top of the first inning, the Cubs’ out-fielder Kosuke Fukudome was grounded out to first base and Starlin Castro flied out to centre-field. On the other side, the White Sox batters scored three runs to get a 3-0 lead.
Juan Pierre scored the first run of the game when Carlos Quentin singled to right-field. The second run was taken by Quentin while Paul Konerko struck a solo homer (361 feet) towards left-field. The pitchers did not permit a run during the second inning.
During the third inning, the Cubs got off the mark by posting two runs and reduced their lead 3-2. Geovany Soto and Fukudome both scored two runs when Castro singled to centre-field. Fourth and fifth inning also went score-less as the batters got out in
search of runs.
Zambrano permitted three runs on seven hits including three earned runs and gave two walks on his 115 pitches. Zambrano commented on his errors and said, “People change. I'm human. Everybody makes a mistake, some make big mistakes. ... The most important
thing is to relax after you make a mistake.”
The Cubs’ batters added four runs during the sixth inning and got a 6-3 lead. Blake DeWitt and Aramis Ramirez both contributed two run while Castro hit a solo homer (392 feet) to left-field and Carlos Pena homered (417 feet) towards right centre to complete
a four-run campaign.
The Cubs’ manager, Mike Quade had a huge ovation for Zambrano as he said, “So much has been made about his emotional stuff. He was relaxed, he felt good and handled himself great and then really went to work. ...”
The batters were unable to score any run in the last three innings of the game. The White Sox starter, Gavin Floyd was little bit shaky with the ball as he permitted six runs on five hits with six earned runs in his five inning pitches. He struck-out three
batters and gave three walks on 101 pitches.
