Carlos Zambrano’s pitching helps Chicago Cubs overpower New York Mets, 9-3 – MLB Update
Chicago Cubs’ starter, Carlos Zambrano had a remarkable day as he threw six dominant innings with an ERA of 4.59 and struck out five batters in the Cubs’ 9-3 victory against the New York Mets at Wrigley Field, Chicago on May 26.
Zambrano allowed two runs on six hits with one earned run and gave away just two walks on 101 pitches. The Cubs’ General Manager Jim Hendry had a huge ovation for Zambrano as he said, “It's nothing at all to worry about. Obviously he's throwing the ball
well and swinging the bat well.”
The pitchers threw the ball in perfect areas and restricted the batters from scoring any runs in the first two innings. The Mets opened their scoring account in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead when Jose Reyes doubled to right field and scored a single
run on the throwing error of Darwin Barney.
On the other side, the Cubs’ batters stepped on the gas and initiated their fourth inning by adding four runs. Carlos Pena hit a solo homer (394 feet) towards right-field while Starlin Castro, Alfonso Soriano and Tony Campana each singled to complete a four-run
campaign. The score-card moved to 4-1 at the end of fourth inning.
The Cubs’ Manager Mike Quade was pleased with the performance of Campana and said, “It's awfully fun to watch him run around out there. Not just because of his speed, but his enthusiasm and everything else.”
During the fifth inning, both the teams scored their respective runs to take the score-board 6-2. For the Mets, Josh Thole singled to left-centre field and Jason Pridie posted one run. Pena and Blake DeWitt both contributed two runs in the fifth inning.
The Cubs extended their lead 7-2 during sixth inning when Barney hit a sacrifice fly to centre-field and Zambrano scored a run.
DeWitt posted one run and Campana moved to second base on the wild pitch of the Mets’ reliever Tim Byrdak to give the Cubs an 8-2 lead in the seventh inning. In the final inning, both the sides added one run and ended up at 9-3. Jason Bay scored a single
run for the Mets while Kosuke Fukudome homered (380 feet) towards right-field to lift the Cubs.
