Carlota Ciganda finishes inside top 10 in India
Spanish Carlota Ciganda sought to finish off the Hero Women’s Indian Open 2012 as a star performer, but all her efforts could garner was a fourth-place finish.
Ciganda was looking to further cement her position at the top spot of ISPS Handa Order of Merit, as her nearest rival German Caroline Masson gave a miss to the three-day Ladies European Tour
(LET) tournament.
The Spanish star has been in an intense competition with Masson who currently stands at the second position in the Order of Merit.
However, Masson’s absence from the Hero Women’s Indian Open 2012 gave Ciganda plenty of room to further tighten her grip on the money race.
Ciganda kicked off the tournament with confidence but she could not capitalise on her vast experience and ended up posting an unimpressive 75 in the first round.
She carded three bogeys and one double bogey, taking a toll on her overall position.
The second round saw the ambitious star improve her position on the leaderboard as she carded a 68, with the help of six birdies.
Ciganda could have further boosted her position in the final round, but she missed several good chances. She opened the round with a bogey on the first hole, but quickly regained her momentum
by shooting a birdie on the par-3 third.
The LET titan impressed the spectators once again as she shot her second birdie on the difficult par-3 8th.
On the back nine, she carried on in the same pace as she posted two birdies and one bogey.
Thai Pornanong Phatlum remained in contention will the final moment of the tournament as she shot an overall score of 203. Phatlum grabbed a stellar four-stroke triumph against her nearest
rival Caroline Hedwall of Sweden, who was the defending champion of the tournament.
Sharing her thoughts while speaking to the media at the end of the tournament on Sunday, Phatlum said that she was happy that she has been able to grab a victory in India once again.
The Thai star is the two-time winner of the LET event as she racked up titles in the 2008 and 2009 edition.
Phatlum went on to say that her short game was exceptionally well, helping her gain much-needed points, even on tricky holes.
