Carlota Ciganda notches up Rookie of the Year award
Spanish Carlota Ciganda, who won the ISPS Handa Order of Merit 2012, has also been awarded the Rookie of the Year title for the recently concluded season.
Ciganda turned professional in May 2011 and started her rookie season on the LET (Ladies European Tour) at the start of 2012. Taking over the ISPS Handa Order of Merit list quite early in the year made her stand out among all the contenders.
Ciganda has become the first player, after Laura Davies, to win both ISPS Handa Order of Merit and Rookie of the Year. Davies won the two accolades back in 1985.
The Spanish star has not just got her hands on these two awards, but she has also been picked “Players’ Player of the Year” for the season—something reflecting her solid performance throughout the year.
Ciganda won two tournaments and recorder ten other top-10 finishes in the year, which was enough to place her atop the lineup.
Speaking to the media about the prestigious award during her interview this Thursday, Ciganda said that she is more than happy to have been declared the best player on the LET.
“It has been a great rookie year for me. I have been playing really good golf, very happy with my game. For me, the best memories, they have been winning the two events,” said the young gun who recorded triumphs at the Deloitte Ladies Open and China Suzhou Taihu Open.
Ciganda said that racking up her first LET title turned everything around in her fledgling pro career, and her fan base increased around the world.
“The first one in Holland, it was very special because it was my first one. And it was also my birthday week and my mom was there, my uncle, so that was nice.
“Then winning in China was also great, because I played really good golf, and I had a lot of fun”.
The star performer further said she is looking forward to carrying on in the same way in the 2013 season, but she also pointed out that there is so much to be done in order to further improve her game.
