Carmelita Jeter aims for a diamond at the DN Galan Samsung Diamond League – Athletics news
Knowing the fact that every new stadium record holder at the DN Galan Samsung Diamond League event in Stockholm is rewarded with 1-carat diamond, Carmelita Jeter, the 31-year-old American sprinter, who specialises in 100m sprints, has set her eyes over the
prize which has a worth of US $10,000.
However, at the event, which is set to kick-off on July 29, outdoing the stadium record owned by Russian runner, Irina Privalova since 1994, will be no less than an uphill task. Privalova, the veteran athlete had clocked 10.90 seconds for approaching the
100m target. She had bagged a diamond for accomplishing the 200m run in a record (stadium record) time of 22.02 seconds.
Jeter, the second fastest woman in the history of the discipline, who also boasts of a personal best of 10.64 seconds, is confident about attaining the precious reward. Talking about her resolve to earn the promised diamond, she said, “I would love to get
a diamond at DN Galan. Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.”
Keeping her form and previous records in sight, organisers are hopeful that the experienced American will prove herself worthy of a diamond gift. Not only that, if an athlete like Jeter gets the privilege of claiming the prestige, it will also mark the quality
of the run. Hinting towards this fact, Rajne Soderberg, director of the event, while sharing his thoughts said, “Carmelita definitively has the capacity to break the record. So far we have given out 67 diamonds. I hope that I can give away many more on Friday.”
Looking over the chances of Jeter achieving her planned targets statistically, one gets to know that the ultimate goals are not that difficult. From the races she has run so far, her average finishing time stands at about 10.792 seconds, which is well below
the time she is aiming for (10.89 seconds).
Moreover, she has been in the best of form these days, as she has been training hard to emerge at the Daegu event. The veteran, who believes that there is still room for improvement, will certainly lower her time further, as this will get her closer to the
1-carat diamond at the DN Galan Samsung Diamond League.
