Carmelo Anthony: New York Knicks rumours either false or exaggerated
In a recent interview with
FanHouse, Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets denied one report by the
New York Post while confirming a second - while downplaying its significance.
The first involved claims that Anthony had had multiple conversations with long-time New York Knicks’ fan Spike Lee about joining the team.
"Never. Inaccurate. False,'' Anthony told
FanHouse earlier this week when asked about the report.
The second report that was confirmed by Anthony had to do with his wedding on 11 July to La La Vazquez. According to the
New York Post, Chris Paul, the All-Star point guard for the New Orleans Hornets, made a champagne toast saying that himself and Anthony should team up with Amar’e Stoudemire in New York City, compiling a third
Big Three in the Eastern Conference, along with the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat.
"It was at my wedding,'' Anthony said. "Everybody was having fun. The Miami Heat thing was the hot topic at that point in time. There were a lot of guys, a lot of players there, just laughing
and joking about it. It is what it is"
He continued by downplaying the talk, saying it was just lighthearted talk.
"It wasn't set up. It wasn't staged or anything like that. It was just everybody was having a good time laughing and joking.''
The small forward for the Nuggets has been embroiled in trade rumours ever since he refused to sign a three-year contract extension with Denver worth $64 million, a deal which has been
on the table since August. Anthony, a free agent after this season, is thought to have the New York Knicks as his number-one destination.
It is possible that the Nuggets will try to trade Anthony before the NBA trade deadline on 24 February, which would get Denver something in return instead of losing him to free agency.
But Anthony said he hasn’t ruled out the contract extension.
"It's still there,'' he said of the Nuggets’ deal. "My options are open. That's where I want to leave it at.''
In the meantime, the Nuggets make their lone visit to Madison Square Garden on 12 December.
"Now, I expect that to be a zoo,'' said Anthony.
