Carmelo Anthony leads the New York Knicks to an 88-76 win over the Indiana Pacers: NBA Recap
Carmelo Anthony scored 26 points and grabbed 9 rebounds as the New York Knicks dropped the Indiana Pacers 88-76 here at the Madison Square Garden Sunday night. The Knicks who had their 7 game winning streak snapped by the Grizzlies
the other night, got back to winning ways immediately and were sharp in the defence tonight.
"Guys are buying in and they understand that if you do that [play defence] at a high level, you put yourself in position to win games." Woodson commented on holding the Pacers to 76 points.
Raymond Felton had 11 points and 8 assists while J.R. Smith came off the bench to add 13 points and grab 7 rebounds for the Knicks.
Paul George led the Pacers with 20 points while David West had 14 points and 7 rebounds as only two players reached double scoring figures on the night. Pacers shot better than the Knicks from the floor, but they gave away possession
19 times compared to only 8 turnovers by the Knicks.
A Tyson Chandler dunk shot put the Knicks 4-2 early in the period. David West scored two from free throws as the Pacers went 5-4, the only time they were ahead of the Knicks the entire game. A Felton layup had the Knicks up 6-5
and they never looked back as the score was not even tied after it. An Anthony jumper pushed their lead to 17-12 around the halfway quarter mark and the Knicks were leading by 21-18 at the end of the period.
Pacers kept a check on the Knicks early in the second period. George sank a pair of free throws to cut the deficit down to 24-26. The Knicks then went for a quick 13-3 burst to put some distance between themselves and the Pacers,
39-27. It was a low scoring affair in the second period as only a total of 32 points were scored in it. A Smith jumper closed the period for the Knicks as they went into halftime leading 41-30.
Anthony made a layup in the early goings of the third period to put the Knicks up by 48-36. They extended their advantage to 16 points after a Ronnie Brewer driving reverse layup. Sam Young fired a three pointer to reduce the deficit
down to 54-63 but the Knicks were in no mood to be chased down, pushing their advantage to 68-56 by the end of the period.
Rasheed Wallace scored four quick points for the Knicks as they went up 72-58 early in the final period. They kept pulling ahead and a Smith shot from downtown had them up 79-60 at the six minute mark. A Steve Novak three pointer
opened up a 20 point lead for the Knicks on 86-66 with only 2:35 minutes left on the clock.
Pacers turned on the damage reduction mode after that and ended the match with a 10-2 run to reduce deficit to 76-88.
