Carmelo Anthony stars again as New York Knicks cruise past Detroit Pistons 121-100: NBA Recap
Carmelo Anthony once again led the New York Knicks with a game high 29 points, lifting them to a 121-100 win over the Detroit Pistons here at the Madison Square Garden on Sunday night. J.R. Smith had a double-double with 15 points
and 10 rebounds, Raymond Felton scored 14 points and dished out 10 assists while Steve Novak came off the bench to add 18 points for the home side, going 5 out of 7 from behind the arc. The Knicks shot 17 out of 33 from the three point range on the night.
"We didn't play as good as we wanted to the last two games so we knew it was important to come out today in front of the Garden and make sure we played a lot better”. Novak commented after the Knicks snapped their two game losing
streak with a home win.
Brandon Knight led the Pistons with a team high 21 points, Kyle Singler posted 16 points while Charlie Villanueva came off the bench to collect 17 points.
Anthony started the game red hot; he knocked down a three pointer in the early going of the first period to put the Knicks up 7-4. Moments later, a Singler layup put the Detroit up 8-7. The Knicks started pulling ahead and were
up 16-13 after another shot from downtown by Anthony, he scored three out of three in the first period from the three point range. They Knicks pushed their lead to 32-22 by the end of the period.
The Pistons started the second period sharply; they went for a 7-0 run to cut the deficit down to 29-32. The Knicks however wanted to keep some distance between themselves and the Pistons and a Smith shot from downtown put them
up 43-34. Novak pushed their advantage to 50-38 when he dropped down a three pointer .They kept pulling ahead and were enjoying a solid 20 points lead by the end of first half. The Knicks went into the locker room leading 64-44.
The Detroit opened up the third period with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit down to 52-64. Felton sank a three pointer to put the Knicks up 70-57 a little while later, but the Pistons were close on their heels and made it a 9 point
game on 71-80. An Anthony jump shot had the New York leading 86-72 at the end of the period. The Pistons outscored the Knicks by 6 this quarter but the damage had already been done in the first half.
The Knicks cruised to victory as the Pistons never really threatened to make a comeback in the final period. Tyson Chandler made a dunk shot early in the period to put the Knicks up 95-78 and Novak slammed one home from downtown
to extend their advantage to 98-81. That was pretty much the start of the end for the Pistons.
