  1. You could stay at the Hotel Vivit, Mestre which is just a 10 minute bus ride from Venice. Nice hotel 79 euros for B&B.

The carnival has started, and finishes on the 5th of Feb. I would try and get there for the weekend 2nd/3rd Feb. I think there is a firework display on the Sunday, but dont quote me on that.

The strange thing is, all those people in masks are not Italian, but mainly French

ps I was quoted 79 euros per night, but then I have stayed there for the last 3 years, you may have to pay more, check out their rates page.

  2. Hi, I'm from Venice (more or less), carnival has already started but the culmination is on February the 5th with "Mardi Gras". If you want to stay in Venice you don't have to stay in Venice, You have to board room in Mestre. From Mestre or Campalto you have a lot of bus or train that could bring you to Venice in less than 15 minutes and prices are surely cheaper. The best days are from February the 1st to the 5th, reserving a room in a Hostel in Venezia or better in Mestre o Campalto.

  3. If you don't mind getting up early, book at Trieste, its about 45 min train ride to venice.

Its really nice there too. Lots of sights to see.

  4. i've never been in venie... i don't know

  5. Carnevale? Yes it has already started and good luck trying to find a place to stay. This is an event that needs planning way in advance. You can try. It would also be considered a "high season" so you would have to expect to pay the highest rate. There are a couple of hostels there, but I am sure that they are booked.

You can try to stay outside of the city, in the Venezia Mestre (which I am sure is booked up already), Verona, or somewhere else in the Veneto region and take the train in. Whatever you do, be wary. The Venetians are experts at tourism. Venice has been a tourist destination for centuries. You can phone a hotel, they will tell you that they do not have space but know someone who does. Their "friend" will have a room, but you will be charged even more than normal because the first person will receive a referral fee. If you are desperate who cares.

There are ways to visit Venice on a lower budget, but it takes planning.
