We are not party people, just looking maybe to do some snorkling and shopping. We have a 10 yr old daughter that we are bringing along. The cruise tours are expensive, any ideas?? It looks like from pictures I have seen that at the end of the Progreso pier there is a beach, is it nice??

  1. Go to CruiseCritic.com, click on "Boards" at the top of the page, then "Ports of Call" and look for your ports.

Cozumel is very easy to do on your own.  Take a cab down to Chankkanaab park.  [They have a website, which sometimes has a coupon.]  You can do shopping right at the pier or, if you anchor downtown, you can wander the shops there.

  2. cozumel is great... progresso ..not so much...

in cozumel you can rent a jeep right at the port go anywhere on the island you want.. Dont worry they drive on the correct side of the road and the island is only 30 miles long so you wont get lost. try chankanab state park for snokling or san francisco beach...

    have fun

  3. I just got back from Coz and Progresso last week.  Progresso doesn't have as much to do as most of the other ports.  My advice would be to do a tour of Mayan ruins.  If you want to keep costs down,  try the dzib.... ruins tour.  It is shorter and cheaper than the other Mayan ruins tours.  Since Progresso is on the Gulf side,  you won't have the crystal clear, clean water that you will in Coz.  I would wait until I got to Coz before I did the water activities. Gifts etc will be cheaper in Progresso.  As far as Coz, you can do almost anything you like.  All of the shopping is right on the main street where you will dock.  Coz, is known for it's water activities.  If you want to snorkle, you can eithor hook up with a dive shop or take a snorkle tour from any of the beach clubs.  Although in some areas you can snorkle off the shore,  you really should go on a boat based snorkle tour and then perhaps have them drop you off at a beach afterwards.  You can check out eagleray divers.  Most of the beach clubs have places to eat, chairs / floats etc to rent as well as wave runners etc.  Mr. Sanchos is a nice beach and is not too expensive.  Also, another option is a dune buggy tour.  It is a total blast, you will however need to be able to drive a stick.  You will drive off / on road to the other side of the island and then get a little time for lunch / beach snorkling away from the crowds.  You can also do a Mayan ruins tour from there but they will be pricy.

  4. Progresso is a developing port.

The ship docks about a pier about a 1 or two miles from shore.  They have buses that will take you into town.  The buses drop you at the flea market and you can find some good bargins on knick-knacks.  There are also shops on the pier.

Yes, there is a beach.  The Corona beach clubs charges a few bucks to be on their beach.  The ruins tour was a long and hot but very interesting.  Friends our ours did the Mexican rodeo but were dissapointed.

There are alot of street vendors in Progresso.  Just tellt them no thanks and they will move on.  Don't be surprised...some of the vendors are small children.

There are tons of things to do in Cozumel.  You can still see some damage from the 2005 hurricane. If you don't want to do a tour, grab a taxi and ask to go to the free beach. Be sure to have a good supply of $1, 5 and 10 in US dollars for taxis and shopping in port.

You can book tours on your own but there is a risk since those operators have not been checked out by the cruise lines.

  5. Sounds like I was on the same cruise. The best tour guides are taxi drivers. They  know the best places to dive, party, eat, etc... You're also going to meet others onboard who are in the same situation. Just go with the flow, it's the best vacation I ever had.
