Carnival Fantasy- Progreso. Car rentals?

We're cruising in a few weeks and don't want to pay the ridiculous rates for the ship tours. We'd rather just rent a car and head out on our own. Anyone know anything about renting a car in Progreso?

Yes we did that in Progresso.

Rented a jeep and did our own thing.  Drove to the ocean and a local beach.

I believe it cost about $150.00.  I don't remember.

Yes, the excursions are very expensive and that still doesn't guarantee your safety.  If you read the small print on excursions, it says that they have nothing to do with Carnival.

You can rent a jeep at a shop on the dock in Progresso.

As I recall, it is the last shop on the left before you get to the buses.  There will be plenty of signs hawking the rentals.

Be careful when negotiating the streets in Progresso.  There does not seem to be rhyme or reason to the right of way.
