Question:

Carnival First Time Cruise Food Questions?

by  |  earlier

I have never been on a cruise and had a few questions (We will be on the sensation). While having the "Main Dinner" I heard that you can chose multiple Starters, and that no matter what is on the menu you can always chose a filet of salmon or filet mignon. Has anyone else heard that?

Also, is it an option to make substitutions? example, If i ordered the Prime Rib, could i have the fresh veggie instead of the mashed potatoes with my prime rib? I understand that there are tons of mouths to feed and that customization may be hard.

I think thats it! Thanks!

  2. I have worked in the cruis eindustry for the past 4 years, they will cater to your needs as much as physically possible, if they have the food available onboard they will arrange it for you...no problem just like in a regular retstaurant especially as the sensation is one of there smaller ships.

If you head upto the spa please give Laura, the spa manager my love!

    Enjoy the cruise!

  3. You can order as much as you want of whatever they have.  My husband ordered 3 to 4 entrees every time we sat down for dinner (the man loves to eat).  If you don't like what they have in the main dining room, you can also eat in the casual dining areas where they have pizza and what not.

Now, where they get you is the drinks.  Soda prices are ridiculous so either drink tea, water, or juice (all free).  As for alcohol, try to smuggle it on board (so bad I know) b/c they will get you coming and going there.  I've heard of people using mouth wash bottles, which would work for Vodka died w/ a little green food coloring.  I'm sure there are other ways if you get creative!

  4. The dinner menus usually include one selection of beef, seafood, poultry, pasta and fish.

Yes, if you want two starters, simply ask.

As for customizing your plate, it will take longer for you to get your food since the kitchen assembles the plates in volume in order to serve the first seating quickly and get ready for the second seating.

The dinner meus are posted outside the dining room early in the day so you can get a preview of the eveing's menu.  If you want to customize, try selecting a veggie that is being served that night.

The casual grill and 24-hour pizzeria are also dining options.

  5. I went on the Carnival Valor and the food was very yummy!

The menu in the dining room changes every day. From the tv in your stateroom you can view whats going to be on the menu for the night! There are lots of starters to choose from, two salads, a soup and other items. The first item on the main course can be a starter if you like. If you don't like a starter feel free to get another one. On the valor, every night I had usually a salad and usually a soup. I tried some things I never would have had at home. For example for the soups, once night I had a cold strawberry soup, kinda like a milkshake, I mean that I might have at home but not as a starter for my meal. I also had chilled cucumber soup with dill, very yummy! It gives you a chance you try anything because you aren't paying extra for it.

I'm not sure about the filet salmon thing, sorry.

After the cruise I realized that the food was quite a good deal. When you go to a nice restaurant with 3 or 4 courses it costs you probably $35 plus, so if every night on the cruise you go to the dining room and have a 3 or 4 course meal, thats $245 right there!

The desserts are delicious! Don't say no to the desserts, it was my favorite part of the meal. They present it so nicely!

Umm for subsitutions, sometimes you have a choice of a few things, but most of the time its set. Like you said they have alot of mouths to feed. If you don't like something though, just don't eat it, they wont be offended.

Well thats pretty much all I have to say about the food. Enjoy your cruise!!!

  6. The staff on Carnival are very friendly and helpful.  I'm sure it won't be a big deal to substitute, as long as they are serving whatever it is you are wanting on that particular night.  Just ask the waiter.  We had assigned tables when we went (on the Imagination) so we had the same waiter every night.  He was cool, and cute too!  All of the food I had on my cruise was fantastic, and they had 4 or 5 options for each part of the meal to choose from, so there's something for everybody.  Unless you're an extremely finicky eater, you'll love the meals!!

  7. fancy fish is on the menu every nite at the formal dinners.

go figure -- youre sailing on the ocean ;; lol

and yes, you can substitute. carnival does its absolute best

to make everyone happy. trust me, you`ll have fun and will

    become an addict

  8. There is no problem with having more than one Starter.  Your waiter will be glad to do it.  They always have beef or salmon if you do not want the featured entrees of the day.

As for substitutions, that is a bit more difficult.  You can do it but why bother?

You will have plenty of good food to eat.  Enjoy yourselves.

  9. They are very flexible. If they have the item they can probably prepare it for you. Be sure to give a big tip to the waiter. It might be a good idea to see the Maitre`di before dinner and see what he can do.

  10. Hey, the first cruise I went on I had no idea that at dinner you could have pretty much whatever you want.   You are paying for all of your meals in the price of the ticket and the wait staff will not give you a second look if you cant choose between entrees or appetizers or dessers and order a couple of each.  They have Plenty of food for everyone.  If you want prime rib but want the sides that come with the lobster...ask.  They will do it for  you if they have it.  If you want prime rib and Lobster...have it!  If you want keylime pie and Baked Alaska, have both!  This is one thing that many people who cruise don't know you can do, and is acceptable by the staff... welcome to the world of experienced cruiser secrets and tips.

  11. 1.  You can order as much food as you'd like.  If you want 4 apps, 3 soups, 5 entrees, and 2 desserts.. then you get it.  Talk to you waiter about how you would like it served... you can get each entree one at a time... or just load the table up with plates.  They will accomodate you!

    2.  As for substitutions you can't order the filet mignon each night necessarily... but it doesn't hurt to ask!  It's based on availability.  My friend tried to order the previous night's app, but they didn't have any more so she was out of luck.  You might be confusing filet mignon with just a New York strip (or other similar but lesser quality steak).  For Carnival they make sure to have a plain steak, and a plain grilled chicken on the menu every night.

You can often substitute sides for sides.  If the steak comes with something you want, but you ordered the chicken... just ask!  It gets difficult when it's not on the menu, but again.. just ask.

When I travelled this past October my table had SOOO many requests and they were almost always able to get what we wanted.  Depending on your waiter and assistant, I would expect your requests to come through without a problem.  But be warned, the kitchen in back is nuts... there are hundreds of dishes being prepared and people running around... so i'm sure mistakes are made and things get forgotten or overlooked.  But keep in mind the waiters are always terribly nice so don't take it personally.. just explain what went wrong and they will fix it.

  12. Yup you can do all that and more!
