Carnival Game - knock the tin cans - how far away should the tins be placed?

well....whats the ideal distance between the cans and the player?

I am a Carnys and the games are what I have done for the last 19 years. Normally speaking the cans are anywhere from 5foot to 8 foot from the front of the counter. There some states that regulate the exact distance the cans are apart on the shelf. To know that you are in one of those governed fairs or festivals you will clearly see the circles painted on the counter that the cans are supposed to be in.
