Antonio De Rensis, the lawyer of Antonio Conte, has hit out at the former AlbinoLeffe player, stating there were contradictions in his allegations towards Conte.
Antonio Conte had been accused of conspiring to sporting fraud during his stint with AC Siena. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Filippo-Carobbio-c13775 had been charged with sporting fraud himself and in an attempt to lessen his punishment he gave names of the people involved in the betting circle
which has plagued Italian football for so long.
After investigations were in place, there was no evidence pointing to any wrongdoing by the former head coach of AC Siena. The prosecutor dropped the charges of sporting fraud; however, he did levy charges against Conte. The charges involved the failure
of notifying the footballing authorities of the betting scandal despite having prior knowledge of the wrongdoings.
Conte asked for a plea bargain, which included a 3 months ban along with a fine of 200,000 Euros. The plea bargain was rejected by the FIGC, and Conte and his lawyers have decided to pursue full trial to defend their case. Conte maintains his innocence in
all of this and stated that he was not involved in any of the allegations.
De Rensis was talking to the press and during his interview he went on to state that the prosecutors and the courts were ready to believe a person who has been charged guilty by the justice system. He went on to comment:
“Carobbio lied about other aspects of the affair, claiming he had no more contact with the betting syndicate although he was shown to have made a series of phone calls using an Egyptian SIM card. So why are you so eager to believe him?”
He went on to state that the testimony presented by the former Siena player was not quizzed and deciphered properly, and he remarked:
“This is not justice, but a pure battle. Carobbio’s testimony on July 10 is a banana skin and the silence speaks volumes. He was not asked about the phone calls. It would’ve been the first thing I’d have asked him.”
Juventus have stated their faith and belief that Antonio Conte is not guilty, and are standing by him and all that have been dragged into the Scommessopoli scandal.
