Carol Ann Duffy reveals poem for London 2012 Olympic Games
Carol Ann Duffy, who is a poet laureate, has recently made her poem public which has been written for the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games. The title of the poem of the acclaimed poet is ‘Eton Manor’.
The revealing of the London 2012 Olympic Games poem was done at the Eton Manor Rugby Football Club. The central idea of the poem revolved around the history of the venue regarding which it is written. The Eton Manor has a long and rich history of 100 years.
The Eton Manor has been set to play host to the wheel chair tennis event of the Paralympic Games. Not only that, the location will also be providing its services for the purpose of swimming training for the London 2012 Olympic Games which will commence from
July 27 and last until August 12.
Duffy shared her views on the matter in the following manner, “The original Olympics involved poetry as well as sport, celebrating the wholeness of human endeavour. I think it is very good they are echoing the early spirit of the Olympics, as it would be
a shame not to bring the arts into people's focus. I think it makes us healthier, as well as our running, jumping and marvellous physical achievements, to look more internally at art, music and poetry.”
On the other hand, the chairman of the Eton Manor Association, George Murton, commented on the contribution made by Duffy in the following way, “Carol Ann recognised the loyalty, camaraderie, and sheer pride in belonging that members of Eton Manor had, and
have for their club.”
The work of Duffy will become a permanent exhibit at the venue as it is part of the Winning Words project that was launched to include poetry in the London 2012 Olympic Games. Duffy is not the only poet whose work will become a permanent exhibit at the Olympic
venues, as several other poets have been included in the Winning Words project.
Many of these poems will be visible at the Olympic Park by the time that the Games start. These poets include John Burnside, Jo Shapcott, Lemn Sissay and Caroline Bird.
