I have read on Yahoo UK News this morning that Carol was asked to take a pay cut or leave and given just 48 hours to make a decision. Is this the end of Countdown?

  1. The show is very popular, so I doubt it.

  2. thank the lord

  3. Yes, she was apparently asked to accept just £2000 per week for her part-time job.  That would barely cover her Freeman's catalogue clothes payments - she already has to make do with old outfits that are out by a couple of sizes.

The producer now has the opportunity of a fresh start, perhaps a reversal of the roles.  A witty, vivacious and well-educated female main presenter - maybe someone like Carol Thatcher.  And some inconsequential Adonis to do the arithmetic.

  4. Famous for being a woman that can do sums!!!

Her part is the smallest in the show.  The front man and the guests have the hardest job to do.

But perhaps the simple answer is to look at other TV programmes she has tried to do where she has come across as very light weight and the programmes have closed!!!

I actually believe that the fame accorded to her as a woman who can do sums is excruciatingly demeaning to other women!!!

  5. Poor Carol it must be like a kick in the teeth after all those years.

  6. No, why sould it be. Time for nice fresh faces on a lot of tv i think. New presenter and new assistant could be the best thing ever. Lets get those auditions started. My hopefuls would include any of the young popular soap stars looking for a new break into presenting

  7. I thought she had already decided to quit because she agreed a 30% pay cut and they wanted to give her 90% pay cut.

I'd say that would be the end of Countdown, Carol's been a real prominant feature on the program, it's their loss. 90% pay cut is ludicrous

  8. Thank God !

  9. She was the only reason that I watched it. My understanding is that she was asked to take a pay cut from three million down to three hundred thousand. Apparently the viewing figures have dropped, and Des O'Connor is also leaving. Carol also said that she couldn't go through another bonding session with yet another presenter, and that Countdown hadn't been the same since Richard Whitely died.

It could be the end, but if not, who would replace her and that wonderful botty.

To be honest, three million is grossly excessive, and she had a lot of financial spin offs from her role there.

  10. I have just retired from my job.

    My jobs lasted  June1965 --- June1973

                                June 1973----March1990

March1990---Nov 2007 finished due to ill health unable to take ill health retirement thus I had to request my works pension 3 years early.

    My salary was £14000per yr

I received £17000 lump sum and a pension of £400 pm  Taxed by this government which says it is the party of the worker (B*******) ( remember I paid this in for forty yrs

I do not qualify for benefits so forgive me if I think Carol Vorderman is being a greedy cow. this is just oneof her " job"a  few hours a week picking out numbers (hardly stressful certainly not dangerous) she had the dam cheek to be paid over 1 1/4 million pound for the episodes and would now  receive £150.000 she is a "celebrity" who can sell herself on many TV appearances book signings etc etc What I hope is that this greedy B**** now finds that instead of moaning and groaning and thinking she is special she will find the whole of the media see her for what she is a greedy *******.

Hopefully she will realise what life is like in the real bloody world.

  11. Faced with a 90% pay cut it was surely obvious that she would leave. Perhaps Des was given the same ultimatum?

Yes, even with a 90% pay cut she would still be on shedloads of money as some people have pointed out, but if she has the opportunity to earn more by doing other things, she would be daft to stay. Carol is a star and it's not likely that you'll see her on the checkout at Morrisons any time soon.

This is obviously an attempt by the producers to either kill off Countdown, or change it into a bargain basement programme with little-known or Z-list presenters. It's not surprising really, most of the original charm of the programme was down to Richard Whiteley and it hasn't been remotely the same since he died.

    Countdown: 1982 - 2008? RIP.

  12. She has had a good run for their money.

  13. Next they'll get rid of the countdown clock and the vowels..

It'll be Cntdwn.. Thank god U is a vowel..

  14. I think it should be as it will no longer include either of the two original presenters, one of whom thought the whole thing up.  What happened in Carol's case, is humiliating.  The whole programme now will be totally boring and should be taken off air.

  15. Is anyone worth that kind of money, I dont think so. All these trivia games should be phased out and the presenters sacked if they cant find something useful to do. lets have an educational channel where adults of all ages can study with a diploma at the end of the course, or something of that nature.

  16. who will they have next if they get rid of carol

  17. they should just axe it now - not the same without richard as it is.

  18. She was on £1mill for christ sakes, for a 1/2 hour daily program.

  19. Yes - I think that loosing both presenters will harm the show irreparably.

It wasn't the same without Richard and many still watched due to Carol and her support of the two new presenters.

90% pay cut was just rediculous.

  20. Wow, she dosent look old enough to retire.

  21. C4 are dumb if they let her go, she's the best thing about Countdown. Who in their right mind would take a 90% pay-cut?

  22. what a waste.

  23. [n] [o] [t] [b] [o] [t] [h] [e] [d]

  24. about time   bye bye carol

  25. about time too
