Carolina Hurricanes, Jiri Tlusty agree on two-year, $3.2 million deal -NHL Update
Carolina Hurricanes began work on their team during a long offseason for the team that failed to make the playoffs yet again as they signed young forward, Jiri Tlusty, to a two-year deal on Tuesday, April 24, 2012, worth a reported $3.2 million.
Tlusty spent a good portion of the 2010-2011 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season in the American Hockey League (AHL) with Carolina’s affiliate club, the Charlotte Checkers, but this past season proved to be a breakthrough.
The 24-year-old played in 79 games during the 2011-2012 regular season and pot 36 points (17 goals, 19 assists) that really brought him to the limelight and proved that he was ready for a bigger role with Carolina.
"Jiri had a very good season and showed that he can contribute as a top-end NHL forward," Hurricanes president and general manager, Jim Rutherford, said. "He should continue to be an important part of the Hurricanes coming off of his career year."
It was the fourth contract that Tlusty has signed so far in his career. The first was back during the 2007-2008 regular season in which he was awarded a three-year, entry-level deal worth $2.465 million. The 2010-2011 contract gave him one-year and $500,000
while the following season bumped it up to $525,000.
Now, with an annual salary cap hit of $1.6 million, Tlusty can focus on more better things, like improving his hockey playing and hoping for an even better contract when this one expires on July 1, 2014.
The native of Slany, Czech Republic, was drafted as the 13th overall pick during round-one of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by Toronto Maple Leafs and was signed on by Carolina Hurricanes near the end of his entry-level contract with Toronto.
He holds a record of 228 career games in the major league along with 74 points consisting of 34 goals and 40 assists and 60 minutes in penalty time.
For Carolina, the young forward definitely has potential and the ability to continue growing with time and becoming a forefront player for the Hurricanes franchise.
It will be exciting to see how next season will allow Jiri Tlusty to grow in the league.
