Carolina Hurricanes, Jordan Staal agree to 10-year $60 million deal -NHL offseason Update
What Jordan Staal gave up back in Pittsburgh with the Penguins, he got it with Carolina Hurricanes as the two stakeholders signed on to a 10-year, $60 million contract on Sunday, July 1, 2012, as soon as the signing became legal according to the soon-to-expire collective bargaining agreement.
Staal was set to become an unrestricted free agent after finishing off his last year with the Pittsburgh Penguins and reportedly, the team had wanted him back for another 10, which can also be termed to be what he signed on with Carolina for.
His previous deal was a four-year one, worth $16 million while Staal’s new contract will be giving him a cool $6 million for the next 10 consecutive seasons before he becomes a UFA once again after the 2022-2023 hockey year.
Getting a player like Jordan Staal and teaming him up with All-Star brother Eric, the Carolina Hurricanes have managed to put together two missing pieces of the puzzle that will make them a championship winning team yet again.
Ever since they acquired Staal, Carolina has become the centre of attention and general manager of the Hurricanes club, Jim Rutherford, is definitely excited about it.
"The perception has totally changed about the Hurricanes since we've acquired Jordan Staal," Rutherford said. "This is really a game-changer for us, the fact that you get a young, elite player that can do so many different things in the game."
"All I can say is that we're in the trade market and we're active," he added.
Having the two brothers together "represents a cornerstone of our franchise for the long term" for Rutherford as the duo can play anywhere on the ice. From smashing players into the sideboards when needed to blocking pucks and scoring goals, the Staal brothers can do it all.
Staal was picked up by the Pittsburgh Penguins as the second overall draft pick back in 2006. He has a total of 431 games and 248 points (120 goals, 128 assists) under his belt. Last season was his career best as he put up 50 points (25 goals, 25 assists) and ended with a plus-minus rating of 11.
