With the 2012-2013 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season on the verge of being entirely cancelled, veteran league defenseman, Jaroslav Spacek, has decided to end his career in the North American major league according to a report on Monday, November
19, 2012.
Drafted as the 117th overall back in round-five of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers, Spacek spent his 13 seasons in the major league with seven different teams. His first gig in the NHL was with Florida Panthers and it has ended
with nearly a half season with the Carolina Hurricanes.
iSports.cz, a website based in the Czech Republic, was the one to make the announcement that the native of Rokycany, Czech Republic, had decided to end his career after labour negotiations between the league and Players’ Association have failed up until
this point.
His best career season had 45 points, twice in his tenure, once with the Columbus Blue Jackets and second time with the Buffalo Sabres. Spacek was always considered a valuable resource for any team he played for, like the Panthers, Blue Jackets, Chicago
Blackhawks, Edmonton Oilers, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens and Carolina Hurricanes.
Last season, 2011-2012, Jaroslav Spacek was traded from Montreal to Carolina earlier in December. In a total of 880 games played throughout his career, potted 355 points, of which 82 are goals along with 273 assists made with 618 minutes in the penalty time.
His final contract was a three-year one, which was worth a total of $11.5 million and gave him an annual salary cap hit of $3.833 million along with making him an unrestricted free agent by the end of 2011-2012.
Spacek was not signed on to a deal by any team during the offseason and obviously could not secure one after the previous collective bargaining agreement came to an end on September 15, 2012.
There have been no announcements made in the regard whether he will continue playing with teams abroad but sources are citing that he may continue doing so in his native country, the Czech Republic.
Updates should be expected in the upcoming weeks.
