Carolina Hurricanes edge Ottawa Senators 2-1 -NHL Update
Carolina goalie, Cam Ward, was having a perfect night till Ottawa scored their first in the last seconds of their Tuesday night, April 3, 2012, contest but Hurricanes managed to emerge on top, edging Senators, 2-1, at the sold-out Scotiabank Place in Ottawa,
Ontario, Canada.
After a scoreless first period, Ward was on a roll and shutout Ottawa in round-two as well as Hurricanes’ forwards stepped up to the task of getting the win.
Hurricanes’ rookie, Brandon Sutter, fired off their first and his 17th of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season while Tuomo Ruutu potted the game-winner on a late Ottawa penalty with Nick Foligno out for kneeing.
"Most of the games when you're playing from behind the results are not going to be what you like," Senators coach, Paul MacLean, said. "They were obviously more competitive than we were and I think we got what we deserved."
MacLean was especially frustrated when the officials declared an apparent goal by Chris Neil to be waved off after reviewing the play for a number of minutes while also bring the game to a halt.
"I don't get those explanations," MacLean added. "They don't seem to take the time to come and talk to us on the bench about them, but the Evander Kane goal in Winnipeg seemed to be eerily similar and it was allowed and this was wasn't. I'm not sure why
they're different."
Jason Spezza brought Ottawa on the scoreboard and made it a one point game, but with just 13 seconds left to play, the Senators needed a miracle which obviously did not come.
Cam Ward’s 38 blocked shots performance allowed Carolina to hold on despite them giving five power play opportunities to the opposition. He was just seconds away from earning his sixth shutout of the season, but nevertheless, was satisfied with how his team
played.
"We almost kept them off the score sheet," Ward said.
Carolina Hurricanes will be returning home to host Montreal Canadiens on Thursday while Ottawa Senators host potential first-round playoff contenders, Boston Bruins, the same day.
Seeing the Ottawa-Boston matchup will definitely be exciting as both teams are set to go head-to-head in the opening round of the NHL postseason.
