Carolina Hurricanes move into play-off spot after winning 3-2 against Atlanta Thrashers
Atlanta Thrashers hosted the Carolina Hurricanes at the Philips Arena with the play-off position stake. A win for either of the teams would put them in the final play-off position. The game saw quite a few people coming to witness the game.
Both teams were pretty much even throughout the course of the game but it turned out to be the case of one team being more productive. Carolina Hurricanes score the opening goal and didn’t fall behind the Thrashers during the entire game and won the game
3-2 in the end. Erik Cole, winger of the Hurricanes was named the star selection of the game for his winning goal.
The game started on the slower side with both teams reluctant to go on the attacks. Though some good play was observed in the middle but the frontline of both teams was unable to capitalize as they came up with the slip ups regularly. However, the away side
silenced the home crowd as they scored in the 10th minute to get into the lead.
The goal was scored by Jiri Tlusty from a well placed flick shot. Hurricanes kept on piling pressure on the Thrashers defence. The Thrashers also came up with attacks in response to this. There were several scoring chances for the Thrashers but they looked
weak and deficient on confidence when it came to the final touch.
As a result, the period ended with the Carolina Hurricanes leading 1-0 at the end. During the course of the period Carolina Hurricanes made 8 goal attempts while the Atlanta Thrashers made 9 goal attempts.
The second period saw winds change directions right from the start. The period saw the Atlanta Thrashers making a flying start to the game which saw them attacking every now and then. Thrashers worked really hard right from the start and were rewarded for
this with a goal in the 4th minute which was scored by Andrew Ladd.
The defence also was very solid as the midfield and front dominated the proceedings in the period. Thrashers came up with the regular shots on goal controlling the pace of the game. They kept possession for quite some time before making an attack.
The defence worked very well throughout the period but a slip up late in the 19th minute saw the Hurricanes scoring to leave the Thrashers trailing once again. The goal was scored by Joe Corvo from a powerful strike. The period ended with the
Hurricanes leading 2-1 though they made only 5 goal attempts in the period while Thrashers made 20 goal attempts!
The final period began on the same roads as the previous one. Thrashers successfully scored within the first minute to level the scores. The goal was scored by Andrew Ladd who scored his second goal of the night from a superb backhand shot.
The Thrashers continued to dominate the game offensively as well as defensively. They were very strong at the back throughout the period. However, Hurricanes were able to get past them and score in the 19th minute to win the game. The goal was
scored by Erik Cole after some strong passing and play making in the middle. The period and game ended with Hurricanes winning 3-2. During the course of the final period Atlanta Thrashers made 14 goal attempts while the Carolina Hurricanes made 4 goal attempts.
