Carolina Hurricanes re-sign Brandon Sutter to 3-year, $6.2 million contract –NHL offseason Update
After a series of successful negotiations, centre player, Brandon Sutter, has re-signed to a three-year, $6.2 million contract, with his original draft team, Carolina Hurricanes, and will be entering his third consecutive season with them.
Carolina Hurricanes team president and general manager, Jim Rutherford, made the announcement on Wednesday evening about the agreement between his management and Sutter’s agent had been successful and that a deal had been finalised.
"Brandon is one of the cornerstones of our franchise moving forward", Rutherford said during a press conference. "He is an extremely intelligent player who can perform in all situations, and has already grown into a leadership position for the Hurricanes
at a very young age".
According to his deal, Sutter, a restricted free agent, will be awarded in varying styles. The contract will pay him $1.5 million the first year, $2 million the second and finally $2.7 million during the final season.
At the age of only 22, Rutherford is positive that Sutter, who is also the son of Calgary Flames head coach, Brent Sutter, will grow as one of the best in the league overtime.
"We rightfully talk a lot about Staal and Ward and Jeff Skinner, with the year Jeff had, but Brandon Sutter I would put in that group in terms of his importance to the team and our success rate. I also think he's just starting to develop into the player
he's going to be", he said.
Sutter was drafted as the 11th overall pick during round-one of the 2007 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft by Carolina. After a slow first season during the 2008-2009 timeframe, Sutter blasted out and registered points in manifolds.
The Huntington, New York, United States native, was only able to score six points (1 goal, 5 assists) during his first season, but came back and fired 40 points (21 goals, 19 assists) in the one following.
He played all 82 games for the first time last season and potted 29 points (14 goals, 15 assists) along with finishing off with an impressive plus-minus rating of 13.
Known for him competitive nature, Sutter is expected to have a high-scoring regular season when it starts in October, but until then, he must continue impressing Carolina management during training camp.
