Carolina Hurricanes rebound at home against Winnipeg Jets 2-1 -NHL Update
Winnipeg might be ahead of the game in terms of ranking in the Eastern Conference, but Carolina did not take that into perspective as the Hurricanes downed the Jets, 2-1, on Monday night, January 23, 2012, at the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, United
States.
Carolina is still at the 12th number position with 45 points, in lieu with the Montreal Canadiens.
"The first couple games, you're trying to get your timing back", said Carolina’s Jeff Skinner. "You try everything you can in practice to (simulate) game situation with little drills that are going to help you. But there's so much chaos, so many variables
in the game that you can't take all of them into account in practice".
Skinner potted the first goal of the night at the 3:55 mark of the opening period while Tim Brent extended the Carolina lead nearly midway through the initial phase.
Carolina gained some momentum after, Toumo Ruutu, was booked coming right into the matchup with a minor penalty for boarding.
"When things aren't going that well, you're complaining that the bounces aren't there", Skinner added. "You can look back on that one and it was a pretty good bounce for us".
Even though the Hurricanes have played their third game in four nights, they seemed set and ready to go as soon as they came back home after back and forward games on the road and at the RBC Center.
Winnipeg failed to capitalise on another power play advantage, this time as Jussi Jokinen was booked with a minor penalty for tripping nearly midway through, but the Jets showed they could score without the added man as Kyle Wellwood shot his ninth of the
2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season to put the visitors within one goal of levelling it.
Jets will be continuing their six-game road trip by playing their second straight against the Rangers in New York on Tuesday while the Carolina Hurricanes will be certainly hoping that their good luck continues against the New York Islanders on the same
day.
It will definitely be interesting to see which of these teams will be able to counter back in their next matchups.
