Carolina Hurricanes snap losing streak with 3-2 win over Toronto Maple Leafs -NHL Match Update
Carolina rookie, Jeff Skinner, was the reason that they were able to snap their three-game losing streak, allowing the Hurricanes to edge the Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-2, on Sunday night, November 20, 2011, at the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, United
States.
Being in the 14th number spot in the Eastern Conference, Carolina still is not where they want to be in the moment, but will eventually have to realise that the only way they can move up in the rankings is through winning more and more games.
"This is big," Carolina Hurricanes captain, Eric Staal, said. "No one likes the situation we're in and no one likes to lose. It was nice to have the same type of effort we had against Buffalo (in Friday's 1-0 loss), and we were rewarded with some goals."
One of the aspects that helped the Hurricanes edge the Maple Leafs was taking a considerable amount of more shots on the Toronto net as compared to the Maple Leafs shooting on Carolina’s.
Toronto’s, Ben Scrivens, faced 41 shots and fell short on three for a total of 38 saves, while his counterpart, Cam Ward, blocked a total of 23 out of 25.
"Everyone (in the room) wants to win," Skinner said. "That's the biggest pressure -- the pressure you put on yourself, especially when you're going through something like we've been going through the last few games. It's not fun."
Skinner set up Jay Harrison for his second goal of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season with 29 seconds remaining in the opening period while Jussi Jokinen came out strong for Carolina again in the next 20 minutes with his fourth during
an early power play advantage.
Phil Kessel stayed hot on the shooting by scoring his 15th during a power play opportunity of their own, while Jeff Skinner potted the game winner with less than seven minutes remaining in order to take the match out of Toronto’s hand.
Kessel fired back at the 19:00 mark to bring Toronto within reach of tying it by one, but the Maple Leafs failed to get anymore through Ward during the final seconds.
