Carolina Hurricanes win 2-1 against the Florida Panthers on home ice
Another one of the interesting games of Tuesday was the Carolina Hurricanes playing host to the Florida Panthers.
A lot was at stake as a win for Hurricanes was important if they wanted to stay in the play-off contention while the Panthers where looking for win to catch up on teams above them.
The Hurricanes with the desperation and determination emerged as very strong team scoring twice in the opening period.
Panthers also scored once in the second period but this was all that they could managed as the game ended up with the Hurricanes winning 2-1 in the end.
Cory Stillman, winger of the Hurricanes who was acquired from Panthers, was named the star of the game as he scored a goal and made an assist in the second.
The Hurricanes backed by the home crowd made a great start to the game which saw them creating chances.
Panthers also came up with a decent performance during which they matched the Hurricanes when it came to the play-making and shots on goal.
The Hurricanes unlike their counterparts were able to capitalize from the strong start as they scored in the 6th minute through Cory Stillman to get into the lead.
The goal was scored through a brilliant strike with Erik Cole coming up with the assist.
The period moved on with both teams all most equal but the Hurricanes scored once again in the 15th minute to double their lead.
The goal was scored during power play by Captain of the Hurricanes, Eric Staal from a simple tip-in shot.
There were a few more shots on goal but the period ended with the Hurricanes leading 2-0 at the end. During the course of the period, the Hurricanes made 8 goal attempts while the Panthers ended up making 7 goal attempts.
The Panthers changed the direction of the winds as they made a superb start to the second period which saw them scoring early in the fourth minute to cut the lead to a single goal. The goal was scored by Stephen Weiss from a brilliant flick shot.
The period saw the Panthers totally dominating the game in every department and giving their opponents absolutely no space for most of the period.
The period ended with the Hurricanes leading 2-1 despite the Panthers making 17 goal attempts while the Hurricanes made 9 goal attempts.
The final 20 minutes of the game had the stage all set for a very entertaining and exciting game in prospect.
However, despite the Panthers outplaying the Hurricanes on offence as they fired 18 shots on goal compared to the five by the Hurricanes they could score.
There defence was also excellent but it was the Hurricanes who won the game 2-1 in the end.
The win helped them maintain the final play-off position but they need to come up with some more results like this one if they are looking to finish in the play-offs.
