Carolina Hurricanes win 4-2 against the New York Islanders
The second game of Wednesday and the 743rd game of the 2010 Compuware NHL Premiere Series was played at the Nassau Coliseum, home of the New York Islanders. The match was played with the New York Islanders playing host to the Carolina Hurricanes
with around 5000 fans coming to witness the match.
The match was pretty much even throughout the sixty minutes of play during which both teams constructed some brilliant pieces of play. In the end, it was Carolina Hurricanes who managed to win the match 4-2. Eric Staal, centre of the Carolina Hurricanes
was named the star selection of the match for as he scored two goals and made an assist in one of the goals.
New York Islanders who are currently struggling in the league with just two points off the bottom place, made a good start to the match. The home teams with the backing of the small crowd managed to come up with some good pieces of play but as it has been
the case for most of the season, they failed to score goals.
With the passage of time, Carolina Hurricanes got stronger and stronger and started to come across scoring chances more frequently. The home team’s defence started to come under a lot of pressure and finally crumbled with Zach Boychuk striking the final
blow in the 15th minute. The goal was scored through a brilliant flick shot after which it was all about the Carolina Hurricanes. Shots from everwhere on the pitch and every now and then were seen.
However, no further goals were scored as the period ended with the Carolina Hurricanes leading 1-0 going into the break. During the period, New York Islanders made 6 goal attempts while Carolina Hurricanes made 14 goal attempts.
The second period saw the home team explode at the start of the second period. It didn’t take long for the Islanders to level the scores. The home team scored through Michael Grabner in the very first minute through a brilliant backhand shot.
With the scores level on 1-1, the match got all the more exciting. However, it was Carolina Hurricanes who enjoyed much of the possession. Eric Staal led the Carolina Hurricanes from the front scoring through a brilliant shot in the 6th minute
to get into the lead. The few home fans that came to witness the match were silenced as Carolina Hurricanes scored once again in the 9th minute.
The period saw both teams making a few more goal attempts as the period ended but no more goals were scored. During the course of the period, Carolina Hurricanes made 7 goal attempts while New York Islanders made 13 goal attempts.
The final period of the match proved to be very tight 20 minutes of play during which both teams tried hard to score. However, it wasn’t until the 16th minute when the first goal was scored by Carolina Hurricanes through Brandon Sutter’s brilliant
backhand shot.
Though New York Islanders scored through Andrew McDonald in the 19th minute but it was a little too late as the period and match ended with Carolina Hurricanes winning the match 4-2.
