Carolina Hurricanes wins 3-2 in a shootout against Washington Capitals to keep hopes of playoffs alive
Washington Capitals played host to Carolina Hurricanes at the Verizon Center which ended with Carolina Hurricanes winning the game by 3-2 after a shootout.
The game was important for both teams with Hurricanes looking to close the gap on the eighth placed Buffalo Sabres while the Capitals looking to near Flyers for the Conference title.
The game started with both teams coming out strong and only attacking. They looked like they wanted to score goals as soon and as many as possible but the goalkeepers were able to keep the score on level terms as the period ended.
The second period kicked off with Hurricanes scoring the opener after which Capitals responded with two goals that put it in the lead.
Hurricanes scored the lone goal of the final period that levelled the scores as the period came to an end. There were no goals in overtime but Hurricanes emerged as 3-2 winners after a shootout.
Cam Ward, goalkeeper of Hurricanes, was named the star of the game for his brilliant 38 saves during the course of the game.
Both teams made a strong offensive start to the game which saw them coming across several scoring chances. There were opportunities for both teams to get into the lead but the goalkeepers did an excellent job to keep the score on level terms.
The shots on goal kept on coming and the play construction continued to get back but none of the shots found the back of the net. The period ended with the scores level on 0-0 with Hurricanes making 11 shots on goal while Capitals made 16 shots on goal.
The second period began with both teams continuing to get better and better and they started to create several chances for themselves. Hurricanes managed to score in the third minute during a power-play through Jussi Jokinen to get into the lead.
Capitals responded with some strong attacks but it wasn’t until the 15th minute that it finally scored through Alexander Semin to level the scores.
Capitals kept on piling the pressure and scored once again in the 18th minute through Marcus Johansson’s well placed flick shot to get into the lead.
The period ended with Capitals leading 2-1 as it made 12 shots on goal while Hurricanes could manage nine shots on goal.
The final period began with Hurricanes high on confidence and scoring through Jeff Skinner in the second minute to level the scores.
Both teams had a couple of more chances to score goals with Hurricanes making six shots on goal while Capitals made seven.
However, the scores were still level on 2-2 and the game went into overtime. No goals were scored there but Hurricanes emerged as 3-2 winners of the game after a shootout.
