Carolina Hurricanes wins 4-3 against Atlanta Thrashers in the only game decided in overtime
Carolina Hurricanes hosted the Atlanta Thrashers as part of the 788th game of the season. This was the only game of Saturday which was decided in overtime with another game decided after shootout. This game was pretty much even on paper as turned
out to be very close. The scores at the end of regulation time were level on 3-3.
However, Carolina Hurricanes scored in overtime to emerge as 4-3 winners of the match. Erik Cole, winning goal scorer of the Carolina Hurricanes was named the star selection of the match for his crucial goal.
Both teams started off slowly but with the passage of time the attacks and shots on goal increased. There were several chances for both teams to attack early on with the amount of space in the midfield but they preferred to stay back and not until they were
fully confident.
However, one team had to take the initiative to attack if they wanted to win. Hurricanes were confident on the attacks and constructed some brilliant pieces of play. Unfortunately, this didn’t pay off in fact this went against them as Atlanta Thrashers scored
catching the Hurricanes defence off guard. The goal was scored by Niclas Bergfors from a brilliant shot in the 13th minute.
Both teams didn’t think of anything else after the goal but attacked. Chances came and went for both teams but they couldn’t find the back of the net. The period neared its end and the intensity of attacks increased. Still, there weren’t any goals scored
as the period ended with Thrashers leading 1-0 with both teams making 11 goal attempts during the period.
The second period followed on the same roads. The only difference in the period was the fact that Carolina Hurricanes attacked more than they did in the first period. There were several occasions early on where they could have scored to level the scores
but they failed to find the back of the net.
It was not until the 9th minute that the Hurricanes finally managed to score through Captain Eric Staal from a brilliant shot. The final few minutes of the period were dominated by the Carolina Hurricanes as they bombarded shots on the opposing
goal. However, no goals were scored and the scores were level on 1-1 as the period ended.
The final period of the game saw Carolina Hurricanes scoring in the 9th minute through Brandon Sutter to get into the lead. However, the lead didn’t last long as Atlanta Thrashers managed to score through Brent Sopel from a powerful strike.
Much to the delight of the home fans, Carolina scored immediately after the restart to get back into the lead. The goal was scored by Jiri Tlusty from a well placed flick shot. It looked as if the Carolina Hurricanes would win the match when Atlanta Thrashers
scored once again in the 19th minute through Zach Bogosian from a powerful long range shot to level the scores on 3-3. The regulation time ended on this and the match went into overtime.
It didn’t take Carolina Hurricanes to score through Erik Cole who score in the 2nd minute to win the match 4-3 in the end for the Carolina Hurricanes.
