Carolina Panthers end losing streak as they beat Washington Redskins 21-13 – NFL Week 9 Recap
Carolina Panthers ended their five-game losing run with a 21-13 victory over Washington Redskins in Week 9 game on Sunday, November 04, 2012, at FedEx Field, Landover, MD.
Panthers won the game, thanks to the heroics of their quarterback Cam Newton, who finally gave an astounding performance to put his team through to their second victory of the season.
Newton finished the game 13 of 23 for 201 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 37 yards and scored a rushing touchdown. He also threw an astounding 82-yard pass during the game that was caught by wide receiver Armanti Edwards.
The quarterback looked to have totally overcome the behaviour problems he had earlier this season. According to The Associated Press, Newton said:
"I think it was their homecoming, which was kind of embarrassing for us to be in, and that was a challenge. I think some of the guys took that and put it as a chip on their shoulder."
The game was marked by disappointing performance from the home team as they saw the season slip out of their hand.
This is according to their head coach Mike Shanahan who is now looking forward to the 2013 season. During the postgame press conference, Shanahan said:
"That's what nauseates you, you lose a game like that, now you're playing to see who obviously is going to be on your football team for years to come, I'll get a chance to evaluate players and see where we're at."
Redskins are standing dead last in National Football Conference (NFC) East and lost their third game in a row.
Lack of discipline again hurt the team’s output as Redskins now lead the league with highest number of penalties.
Quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3) was their best performer in the game as he completed 23 out of 39 passes for 215 yards and also rushed for 53 yards.
However, the quarterback was sacked four times which led to a series of turnovers that cost the offensive team heavily.
Redskins opened the scoring chart with a 47-yard field goal from kicker Kai Forbath. However, they failed to retain the lead as Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams made a 30-yard run to the end zone to finish the first quarter 7-3.
Panthers extended their lead in the second quarter to 14-3 with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Newton to wide receiver Steve Smith.
Redskins got another field goal in the third quarter to take the score to 6-14. In the final quarter Newton ran one yard to reach the end zone and took the score to 21-6.
With clock standing at 1:28 Redskins got a consolatory touchdown as the final score settled at 21-13 in favour of Panthers.
