Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera relieved after 30-22 win over Philadelphia Eagles
Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera was desperate for a win this Monday when his struggling side faced the Philadelphia Eagles on the road.
Facing increasing pressure in what has been a highly disappointing season, Rivera knew that another defeat would bring him closer to the sack.
However, he got his break just when he needed it most as the Carolina Panthers powered their way to victory thanks to massive performance from quarterback Cam Newton.
Newton has underperformed this year but he was back to his devastating against the Eagles giving his coach the lift he needed at just the right time.
The Panthers secured just their third win of the season after Newton passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two more to guide his team to a much needed 30-22 win.
Thanks to the win the axe wielded on the neck of Rivera and defensive coordinator Sean McDermott didn’t swing and the two will now hope that the team builds on this performance for the coming games.
Rivera gave McDermott the game ball after the game and speaking to the press afterwards he said:
"After having some success, having to move on is always a tough thing.”
Adding further he said:
"I know it was very personal for Sean because he is from Philadelphia, so getting a chance to beat them – I knew it would mean a lot to him, and I know the game ball will mean a lot to him. Winning is huge. A lot of people say it cures all.”
Cure it does.
The testy atmosphere at the Panthers has given way to relief and positivity and now the team will be looking to build on this big win.
"A lot of people contributed and made plays for us tonight, and at the end we had an opportunity and took advantage of it. I'm real proud of the things that we did to give ourselves a chance to win."
Five games still remain to be played this regular season and Carolina Panther will hope to get some big results while playing in the manner many expected them to at the start of the season.
From being playoff and divisional title contenders at the start of the season, Carolina have now dropped to the bottom but they will take the win over the Eagles and hope it will lead the way to better times ahead.
