Carolina Panthers hire Ricky Proehl, Oakland Raiders hire Chuck Bresnahan
Ricky Proehl had helped the Carolina Panthers reach the Super Bowl in his first season with them back in 2003 so it is only fitting that he would be signed to the team as an offensive consultant. He will focus on working with the Panthers’ new wide receivers’
coach, Fred Graves.
Proehl had spent 17 seasons in the National Football League (NFL) as a wide receiver, having been drafted by the, then, Phoenix Cardinals in the third round, overall pick number 58 of the 1990 NFL Draft out of Wake Forest University. He spent five seasons
in Arizona, then two with the Seattle Seahawks, one with the Chicago Bears, six seasons with the St. Louis Rams, then three with the Panthers and then one with the Indianapolis Colts.
Hopefully, he will be able to coach the Panthers to the Super Bowl, much like he did himself. He appeared in four Super Bowls and won two of them. When he was with the Rams, he helped them to win Super Bowl XXXIV and then went to Super Bowl XLI with the
Colts.
He has a total of 669 receptions for 8,878 yards and 54 touchdowns, averaging 13.3 yards per reception.
In different, yet similar news, the Oakland Raiders have hired Chuck Bresnahan to come to Oakland for another run, this time as a defensive assistant. He was with the Raiders in 1998 and 1999 as defensive backs coach and was then promoted to defensive coordinator
for four years. In Bresnahan’s six seasons with the Raiders, the team won their division, the AFC West, three times and went to the Super Bowl once in 2002.
The team did not specifically say which position Bresnahan would take but a local newspaper reported that he would be a linebackers coach. Raiders head coach Hue Jackson calls him a good teacher and motivator, having worked with him when they were both with
the Cincinnati Bengals.
Bresnahan had been an assistant coach with the Colts and Cleveland Browns before becoming defensive coordinator for the Bengals. Last season, he was with the United Football League (UFL) as a defensive coordinator for the Florida Tuskers.
