Carolina Panthers' quarterback Matt Moore done for the season with torn labrum
The 1-7 Carolina Panthers took another hit on Monday with the announcement that quarterback Matt Moore was placed on injured reserve with a torn labrum in his right shoulder, his throwing shoulder. He will not return this season.
The injury was suffered in a 34-3 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
So far this season Moore has started five of the Panthers eight games, including their only win, a 23-20 victory against the San Francisco 49ers. His completion percentage this season is 55.2, with 857 yards, five touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His quarterback
rating is 55.6.
He played in seven games last season, ending the season with a rating of 98.5.
Moore was sacked 13 times this season, and was hurt in the second quarter after being sacked hard by Sedrick Ellis.
The most likely to take his place is rookie quarterback, Jimmy Clausen, but fellow rookies Tony Pike could see some time as well. Clausen has started three games for the Panthers so far this season completing 51 of 109 passes for 501 yards, a touchdown and
four interceptions. He has a rating of 48.0.
Moore signed a one-year deal as a restricted free agent in the offseason. If Clausen, or Pike, can show signs of being a quality quarterback in the future, Moore’s career in Carolina may have come to an end.
Carolina’s head coach, John Fox, said that rookie, Armanti Edwards, a college quarterback converted to a receiver, will also take snaps at practice. That makes three rookie quarterbacks fighting for the starting job in Carolina.
The injury may open opportunities for rookie quarterbacks, but it doesn’t help the team this season. Already off to a terrible start, the Panthers have games against Tampa Bay and Baltimore in the next two weeks, and they’ll end the season with games against
Atlanta and Pittsburgh. Avoiding last place in the NFL may become number one on the team’s agenda.
