Caroline Garcia, Francesca Stephenson advance in Girls’ Singles – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Second seeded Caroline Garcia of France effortlessly reached the second round of Wimbledon Championships with a straight-forward 6-2, 6-4 victory over Czech qualifier Tereza Smitkova.
Smitkova’s late surge in the second set even could not stop the Frenchwoman from taking out her frustrations on the grass at the All England Club, unleashing her threatening game and rolling her opponent right and left.
Garcia’s form at the end of the opening set was highlighted with a whopping ten winners while committing only two unforced errors. Not to mention, she won a whopping 89 percent behind her first serve, 67 percent behind her second serve and 53 percent of points on return.
Garcia was far more superior in every aspect from start to finish, in improving her year-to-date win/loss mark to 1-0 matches. But most significantly, she never allowed her foe to dictate the points the way Smitkova had planned, clinching the second set in just 31 minutes.
The second-seeded Frenchwoman now marches on into the second round of tournament, where she will face Stephanie Nauta of America in the second round of the Wimbledon Championships.
Also, Great Britain’s Francesca Stephenson ousted Makoto Ninomiya of Japan with a 6-4, 6-2 score to progress to the second round of season’s third major tournament.
Although the contest developed into mostly an error-fest, Stephenson started strong and took it to her opponent in the opening frame of play. The Brit held serves entire way and her second break of the day to finish things off at 5-4.
From that point, the match was all Stephenson. The Brit sprinted out to a 4-1 lead in the second set, all the while discovering more pace and control on her forehand wing. Ninomiya did manage to get a break back for 4-2, but Stephenson broke her yet again and eventually served out the second set 6-2.
With her forehand winners adding up continuously, Stephenson did not let the Japanese to the way she had decided and raced to a lop-sided victory in just one hour and nineteen minutes of play.
Stephenson wrapped up the match with a whopping twelve winners while committing twenty eight unforced errors. In addition, she obtained 79 percent behind her first serve and 41 percent behind her second serve.
Emerging victorious, the Brit is all set to square off against Petra Rohanova of Czech Republic in the second round of the Wimbledon Championships.
