Caroline Garcia, Ons Jabeur victorious in the Girls' Singles quarterfinals – French Open 2011
Seeded third in the Girl’s Singles draw at 2011 French Open, Caroline Garcia looked in stunning form as she secured a thumping 6-2, 6-4 victory over seventh seed Russian Yulia Putintseva to book her place in the semi-final
on Thursday.
The 17-year-old has looked in stunning form on the clay courts of Roland Garros and even came close to recording a major upset when she led 6-3, 4-1 against Sharapova in the second round of Women’s singles tournament. Her
game play was praised by Andy Murray who thought that the French has what it takes to become a top player.
"I like the way she hits the ball. I've watched Sharapova play a lot of times, and quite often when she plays younger opponents they struggle to deal with sort of her power.”
Looking to attack her opponent, Garcia made an aggressive start to the match. With her excellent foot work and precise ball placing, she managed to win crucial points in the first set. She had her first chance of breaking
the serve in fourth game of the set, which she converted successfully to earn a vital 3-1 lead. Putintseva showed good fighting spirit to brake back and reduce her opponent game score lead. However, Garcia kept the focus on her own game play and made a double
serve break to pocket the opener 6-2.
The second set also followed a very similar pattern with Garcia dictating terms in almost all departments of the game. Looking to wrap up the match in straight sets, the French took control of rallies with her well directed
and on-target serves. She broke the challenger in one of the games with her brilliant baseline play and then held on to her serve games quite comfortably to book her place in the last four at the Grand Slam tournament. Her semi-final opponent Russian Irina
Khromacheva made quick work of Estonian Anett Kontaveit 6-4, 6-1 to reach that far.
In another quarterfinal Tunisian Ons Jabeur came back from a set deficit to upset top seeded Daria Gavrilova 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 as she reached semis at Roland Garros.
Jabeur made a shaky start to the start as she committed a large number of unforced errors in the opening set. Gavrilova grabbed opportunities with both hands and bagged the set with in first 38 minutes of play.
However, despite being under immense pressure, Jabeur was able to find her game and displayed some top quality tennis in the next two sets to seal an emphatic victory. She will be facing Portuguese Monica Puig in the semi-final.
Puig defeated Serb Natalija Kostic 6-1, 6-3.
