Caroline Garcia beats Montserrat Gonzalez in Girls’ Singles quarterfinals – Wimbledon 2011
Second-seeded Caroline Garcia from France is through to the girls’ singles semi-final of the Wimbledon Champions after comprehensively outplaying the dangerous Montserrat Gonzalez 6-1, 6(2)-7(7), 8-6.
Gonzalez, a sixth-seeded player at the Wimbledon Championships, put up a great fight in the second set, but Garcia did not lose concentration and managed to bring about a happy ending after lengthy struggles.
Garcia began the act in style, reeling six straight games to even clinch the opener with a breadstick in just 22 minutes of play.
As the second set started, a nerveless volley in the eleventh game gifted the Frenchwoman a break point but her backhand was not operating at its best and an error allowed Gonzalez off the hook.
It would prove costly as the sixth-seeded Gonzalez dominated the tie-break that followed, converting her decisive set point when a Garcia forehand flew long.
Garcia’s hopes took a turn for worse in the decider when she found herself down at 3-5, knowing a golden opportunity to take a decisive lead had slipped away, and there was now the very real possibility that the match would slide
into Gonzalez’s favour.
However, nothing appeared much to distract Garcia and she recovered the deficit quickly, thanks in part to a killer drop shot that would regard as a token of Garcia’s triumph in the latter stages of the match.
Garcia finally took control of the proceedings with a break in the fourteenth game of the decider, converting two breakpoints and moving clear of the tenacious Gonzalez by chasing down a drop shot and guiding a forehand winner
down the line.
Almost exactly after 132 minutes into the match, Garcia served out confidently for a two sets to one lead, as a lightning-quick reaction volley and a sharp drop shot helped her to clinch the match in three sets.
The 2011 Osprey semi-finalist, wrapped up her three-set victory with a whopping 80 percent on her first serve, 46 percent on second serve and a total of 46 of 109 on return. Additionally, she scored a whopping 30 winners and seven
aces while committing twenty seven unforced errors and twelve double faults.
Emerging victorious, Garcia has improved her year-to-date win/loss mark to 14/8 matches and now marches on into the semi-finals of the tournament, where she will face third-seed Irina Khromacheva of Russia.
The outcome of the sequel could depend on how the Frenchwoman manages to beat the Russian, who moved past fifth-seeded Eugenie Bouchard of Canada in another quarterfinal match.
