Caroline Garcia defeats Jana Cepelova to make it to Girls’ Singles quarterfinal – French Open 2011
Third seed local girl, Caroline Garcia cleared the third round of Roland Garros, defeating the unseeded Slovakian, Jana Cepelova, booking a berth in the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam tournament. The French took down her opponent
in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-4, to advance to the final eight of the French Open on Wednesday.
The contest at Paris, France, exhibited brilliant skills of Garcia, who beat her opponent in every segment of the game. She had a tough time in the opener, eventually settling it in the tie breaker round, but cruised through the
next set with ease to book a spot in the quarter-final of the tournament. The French served magnificently, reaching 70 percent accuracy in the contest and reeled off 26 out of 49 points en route to victory.
Cepelova hung in the opening set till the end, dragging it into a tie breaker round but lost her way in the decider. The Slovak crafted eight break chances in the game, converting six of them, but had to suffer seven break points
from her opponent to end on the losing side. Four double faults were recorded by Cepelova on most critical occasions of the matchup, which proved very taxing for her in the end.
The action-packed opener witnessed an exchange of four serve breaks each from the two competitors. Momentum kept oscillating in the first set and the score board kept ticking on even terms, as both girls were not prepared to submit
to their opponent. The scores were deadlocked at 6-6 and a decisive tie breaker was enforced to settle the opening set. Garcia kept her aggressive approach in the tie breaker as well, striking two mini-breaks to seal the set at 7-6(4) and got one up in the
contest.
More intense tennis was seen at the start of the second set, with Cepelova drawing first blood, breaking into a 2-1 lead. Garcia replied quickly and broke into lead, striking two successive serve breaks and inching closer to victory.
The Slovak made her last efforts to survive in the game, breaking Garcia serve later in the set, but it proved a bit too late. The French stung her third break point of the set and closed the contest at 6-4, marching into the quarter-finals
of Roland Garros. Garcia will take on the seventh seed Yulia Putintseva of Russia in the next matchup. The Russian was victorious against the 11th seeded Belgian, Alison van Uytvanck in the third round.
