Caroline Garcia ousts Madison Brengle in the second qualifying round – Australian Open 2012
French teenager, Caroline Garcia, ousted the American competitor, Madison Brengle, in the second qualifying round of the Australian Open in Melbourne Australia. Both players squared off for the first time in their career and the
French marched into the next round with a straight set 6-2, 6-3 win. Sizeable crowd had gathered to witness the upcoming star of France in action and they were not disappointed at all.
Both players started cautiously and held their respective serves in the first two games. Major break came in the third game when the teenager stunned her opponent with two back-to-back winners across the court; that was good enough
to dismantle the confidence of the American. She continued her dominance and the momentum of the match helped her to bag another break in the fifth game to consolidate her position further.
No more breaks were seen in the remaining games of the set and the French pocketed the first set with ease. It was always her set from the word go because she was the one hungry for the win; ascendancy coupled with improvisation
were the essence of her play. On the other hand, Brengle was trailing one set down and looked completely occupied with the overwhelming confident display of her rival.
Second set started with the same momentum but this time the American managed to hold on to her serves in the opening games of the set. She tried her best to break but her rival was providing no opportunity whatsoever to her. Both
players met blow to blow of each other as the scores pushed to 3-3. It was getting ominous for the American as she was hunting for that one vital break that will earn her the advantage over her opponent.
Garcia knew her opponent was itching to get a break so instead of waiting for her to have a go at her, she came up with a surprise onslaught in the seventh game and broke Brengle’s serve that pulled curtains for the American. Garcia’s
guile earned her the successful serve game and another break in the ninth game confirmed her place in the next round.
