Caroline Garcia ousts Victoria Duval in Girls’ Singles quarterfinal – US Open 2011
Opening the bottom half of the Girls’ Singles quarter final of the US Open 2011 was the number one seed Caroline Garcia against un-seeded Victoria Duval. As the two took up the gauntlet on show court 13 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, French Garcia outshone American Duval in straight sets of 6-3, 6-4 victory in just 78 minutes.
Garcia has had a wonderful year as she was able to play top seeded players at the French Open. Although, she won against Ondraskova in the first round, she lost in the second to Maria Sharapova in the second round of the French Open. A semi finalist in many and a finalist in a few ITF events, Garcia reached her highest WTA singles ranking on August 15, 2011 which was 141. This year on the ITF circuit she has played 16 tournament, won 38 matches and lost only 15. With such a winning streak she was the cream of the girls’ singles.
Mean while, Duval at the age of 15 has incredible athletic ability and is beginning to get stronger mentally, day by day. Although, she has been through a lot worse this year, she still kept on practising and playing tennis.
Opening the first round of the set was Garcia as she had won the pitch. As she smashed an ace on game point she held her serve in the first game and in the second went on to breaking her opponent, and eventually took the lead in the third game as she again held her serve. By the fourth game Duval realised she was three breaks down and started to hit ball. In the fifth game she went on to breaking her adversary’s serve and ultimately evened the score at 3-3. In the seventh game Garcia held her serve and in the eighth broke her American adversary for the last time to take the lead 5-3. Now serving for the set she hit two consecutive aces and bagged the set without much opposition.
By the end of the first set, Duval had taken a good beating and eventually pulled up her sleeves. Opening the second set was Duval. The players won on their respective serves in the first eight games and at that point the score board read as 4-4. In the ninth game as Duval served, she rushed to the net but Garcia passed her with a superb lob and broke her with ease to gain the upper hand. During the tenth game, as Garcia served Duval failed to clear it. Thus allowing Garcia to win the second set 6-4
French Garcia eased in to the semi final where she will be facing number three seed Ashleigh Barty, who is an Aussie.
